KUCHING, May 19: A woman and her child were allegedly held at knifepoint while waiting inside a vehicle on May 17 at around 9.15am within the Times Square Roundabout area in Miri.

In a statement, Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah confirmed that a report had been received regarding the incident.

“The victims were waiting inside a white pearl Toyota Fortuner 2.4 Wagon when two unidentified men suddenly entered the vehicle. One suspect allegedly held a knife to the complainant’s child’s neck, while the other suspect threatened the complainant with a knife.

“The suspects then drove off with the vehicle before later dropping the complainant and her child off at the Miri Park area. As a result of the incident, the complainant suffered a cash loss of RM600 and the loss of the vehicle, bringing the total estimated losses to RM170,600,” he said.

Acting on information received and preliminary investigations, a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Miri District Police Headquarters arrested a 50-year-old local man in the vicinity of Times Square on the same day.

Background checks revealed that the suspect has several prior criminal records involving robbery, vehicle theft, and drug-related offences.

Police also recovered the victim’s Toyota Fortuner from the parking area of a shopping mall in Miri.

The case is being investigated under Sections 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed gang robbery.

The suspect has been remanded for six days from May 18 to 24 to facilitate further investigations and to track down another accomplice who is still at large.

Any inquiries may be directed to Senior Investigating Officer ASP Anuar Affindi at 019-7319540.
