The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 4 Episode 3 Recap: Is Korrin Dead?

The band finally get together in the third episode of the current season of “The Legend of Vox Machina”, as Keyleth’s coronation ceremony turns into a nightmare with the assault of the Whispered One worshipping cult, the Children of Truth. However, Scanlan remains absent for reasons unknown, which indicates he might have a bigger role to play in this season. Previously, Percy and Vex encountered a hunchback necromancer who was able to resurrect the monstrous predator Vex had slain, on the other hand Pike and Grog activated a dangerous rune while investigating Priestess Talia’s quarters in Everlight temple. During her trial with the Water Asharis, Keyleth overcame her fears to stop a Kraken from breaching through the water realm rift, becoming the leader of Air Ashari, the Voice of the Tempest in the process.

Vox Machina Reunion: Vax’s Ominous Vision

The episode begins in the Air Ashari village, Zephrah, where the coronation ceremony is about to take place, and Keyleth’s father, Korrin, proudly accepts his daughter’s ceremonial garb. Vilya was supposed to lead Air Asharis but tragically passed away during a water rift trial, and now Keyleth has honored her memory by becoming the leader her mother was meant to be. Vex and Percy have already arrived in Zephrah, and like everyone else they also need to leave their weapons and armour in the armoury during the ceremony. Pike and Grog spot the couple, and Pike asks Grog not to reveal their latest findings about undead priestesses and all that stuff as she believes their former comrades might not be too keen on going on new adventures. For the same reason, and also not to ruin Keyleth’s big day with chatters about next big threats, Vex and Percy too decide to keep their latest misadventures a secret. Their conversation clearly highlights the awkwardness, which even Allura and Kima, who are also present in the ceremony, can sense. While helping his beloved, Keyleth to get over her nervousness with ceremonial speech, Vax suddenly receives a terrible vision from the Matron of Ravens which predicts the death of his friends, including Keyleth. A terrified Vax can’t make any sense of the vision and the goddess of death warns her by mentioning an impending danger for which the Matron has been preparing him since the day he became her champion. Vax remains alarmed, even though he hasn’t learned specifics about this threat mentioned by Matron.

Assault of the Children of Truth

Keyleth’s coronation ceremony goes well, thanks to her experience with Vox Machina, she has the wisdom to emphasize on the strength of collective over a singular title or individual. After the ceremony, Scanlan’s absence is mentioned during a conversation between present members of Vox Machina, and like an eyesore, Taryon Darrington arrives at the scene out of nowhere with his automaton friend, Doty. Right at this very moment, the blindfold wearing cultist leader brings his pack of Whispered One followers to the ceremony grounds, introducing themselves as Children of Truth who want to change the existing world order. The cultist leader speaks in cryptic terms, calling out the Asharis for their hypocrisy and mocking Keyleth for upholding the failed status quo of her previous generations. Vax assumes the appearance of these mysterious rogue mages to be linked with Matron’s vision, and Fire Ashari headmaster Cerkonos attacks the trespassers. The helm wearing enforcer, who was enhanced in the previous episode, takes down multiple members of Ashari before blinding Cerkonos. The cultist mages use their dark magic to instantly kill several Asharis, much to the horror of Keyleth and co. Uvenda asks Keyleth to retreat to safety given her role as the Voice of the Tempest makes her a crucial presence in times of crisis. However, Keyleth makes it clear that she will uphold her responsibility by joining her friends of Vox Machina to defend the people and take down the threat in question.

In the midst of all this, Pike and Percy get into an argument after realizing both of them have kept their recent findings from each other on the wrong assumption that the other party wants to do away with the adventurer’s life for good. Keyleth advises them to keep their argument to a minimum until they take care of the rogue mages. Grog engages with the helm enforcer in a fierce battle, but appears to be on the losing side until Pike heals him. Darrington helps Percy to recover their weapons, while Keyleth focuses on the cultist leader. It appears the leader is also aware of the predicament of Keyleth’s mother, as he  taunts about Vilya’s demise and tries to provoke her further by threatening to kill her loved ones.

Did Korrin Die?

As the heroes of Vox Machina arm themselves, the tides of the battle quickly shift against the cultists’ favour, and the majority of them get taken down. Keyleth reaches out to Vax, believing he is going to get targeted by the cultists but it turns out the leader has chosen his victim in her father, Korrin. The leader almost publicly executes Korrin to make a terrifying example out of him, when Vax’s powers as a Champion of Matron reaches a new height and with unreal agility, he kills the cultist leader and his lackeys. The leader has harnessed the ability to cheat death, like Talia and the Demogorgon, and surprised at the fact that Vax is Matron’s new champion, he decides to flee from the scene, taking helm wearing enforcer with him.

Vax’s heroics saves Korrin’s life, but his eyes can not be recovered. Percy pins down one of the cultists, who kills herself instead of letting them extract intel from her. The horrifying massacre has taken quite a toll on everyone, and have raised more questions about the nature and intentions of the assailants. Percy deduces everything – the monster, Priestess Talia, to be connected with Children of Death, but they don’t have a clue to investigate further. Darrington surprisingly proves himself to be useful by identifying the magic wands used by the cultists to be made of Shadowstone, an extremely rare gem which can be found in the mines of his hometown, Deastok. Vox Machina has a clue about where to investigate first, and Vax ponders about whether the premonition has been averted or whether the true horror is yet to come. As the episode comes to an end, the cultist leader is seen to be approaching someone to share the news of Vax’s status as the new champion of Matron of Ravens. As previously predicted, in a fight against an undead deity, the goddess of death and her champion will play a crucial role. Hopefully Scanlan joins his friends soon enough, and the team gets back its full strength before engaging these new enemies.
