The narrative focuses on the journey of two friends, Muti and Jenar, as their pursuit to make their K-pop dream come true brings out the inner turmoil of a luckless generation which has dedicated their everything to find respite in fancies of a concocted reality. The narrative never turns grim for once, is not didactic in its approach either, which is why it’s really interesting that the key characters are never presented as Mary Sue stereotypes. They are flawed, learn from their mistakes through the course of their journey, which makes them relatable to viewers as well.
Muti Played By Shenina CinnamonIndonesian actor Shenina Cinnamon has previously acted in movies like “Tumbal: The Ritual,” “The Queen of Black Magic,” “Photocopier,” “The Prize,” “Tale of the Land” etc. She has also gained recognition in the small screen scene with her appearances in projects like “Roman Piscian,” “Star Stealer,” “Blood Curse” to name a few. In “Night Shift for Cuties”, she plays the role of Muti, the newly recruited employee of K-Pop themed departmental store, whose obsession with K-Pop band Purple Tea and their lead singer, Boki, knows no bounds. Muti is burdened with financial responsibilities of her family ; additionally, unlike her family members she hasn’t been able to cope up with her father’s demise. In her hectic life, enjoying the activities of the girl K-pop band, Purple Tea, are the only moments Muti experiences the briefest moment of peace. However, Muti’s obsession makes her act uncharacteristically, as despite being an otherwise honest, hardworking person, Muti accepts Jenar’s proposal of stealing from their customers to arrange for travel accommodations. In desperate attempt to keep the liberating, self-reliant ideology reflected by Purple Tea leader Boki’s public image, completely intact, Muti even tries to sabotage Jenar’s relationship with Indra. Surely Indra was a shady guy whose initial motive to pursue the relation was problematic, but Muti’s intentions to warn Jenar about him wasn’t solely motivated by her feelings for her friend, she didn’t want the idealistic image of her favourite K-Pop band to get shattered. As someone who struggles with abandonment issues, Muti feels a misplaced sense of ownership over the people she cares about – leading her to have a hard time with comprehending their individuality. However, by the end Muti realizes how she had taken her family for granted and ignored the most precious things in her life in a maddening pursuit of a fabricated world.
Jenar Played By Nyadya SyarifaIndonesian actor Nyadya Syarifa has previously acted in “Dosya Musyrik”, “After School Horror 2” etc. In “Night Shift for Cuties,” he plays the role of Jenar, Muti’s friend and senior employee of the departmental store. Except her father, Jenar’s family members have been harshly critical of her obese physique, making her feel insecure in her own skin. Jenar looks up to Boki for inspiration, who didn’t let obesity affect her life decisions and confidence. However, her internalized insecurity stops Jenar from noticing obvious red flags about Indra, the person she trusts enough to become her life partner. In fact, Jenar’s low self esteem has even convinced her to compromise even after getting an idea about the problematic traits of Indra. In her single-minded pursuit to win a ticket to attend Purple Tea concert, Jenar became bitter, selfish, to such an extent that she didn’t have Muti’s back despite being the one responsible for planting the idea of stealing from customers in her mind. Jenar eventually gets a reality check after getting entangled in the fake-Boki fiasco. As she becomes aware of the reality of Boki’s emotional upheavals, disillusionment creeps in. By the end, Jenar has grown to become a wiser, more confident person who knows her self worth, and is no longer willing to settle for anything less.
Indra Played By Emir MahiraIndonesian actor Emir Mahira has previously acted in “Garuda di Dadaku”, “Rumah Tanpa Jandela” etc. In “Night Shift for Cuties”, he plays the role of water delivery boy, Indra, who falls in love with Jenar after considering her as a replacement for Boki, who used to be his childhood friend. Indra’s predicament is as curious as it is problematic, as he sought to find someone who matched Boki’s physique instead of trying to find someone who matched her personality. This is also why he eventually fell in love with Jenar, for who she truly is as a person. Indra has learned the err in his ways and is going to try to become a better partner for Jenar, and it will be intriguing to see how the dynamics between him, Boki and Jenar shapes up in the upcoming season.
