iOS 27 brings another very welcome improvement to Camera Control on iPhone
1 hour ago
iOS 27 and Siri AI introduce a positive change to the iPhone’s Camera Control. This welcome improvement is a benefit of the new Siri camera mode replacing Visual Intelligence on the iPhone.
In iOS 18 and iOS 26, long-pressing the Camera Control invokes Visual Intelligence, the Apple Intelligence feature for looking up information using your iPhone’s camera.
This essentially meant the Camera Control launched two very different apps: Camera or your assigned photography app with a quick click, or the whole Visual Intelligence experience with a long press.
If you meant to just click the Camera Control to launch the Camera app but you pressed a second too long, Visual Intelligence would hijack your experience.
This definitely happened to me more than once before I considered turning off the Visual Intelligence long-press feature completely.
It didn’t help that Visual Intelligence felt like a resource-intensive user interface that didn’t really feel like an app on your phone, making the scramble to actually launch the Camera app even more frustrating.
Visual Intelligence no longer hijacks your ability to just take a photo with Camera ControlThat’s where Siri AI and iOS 27 save the day. Visual Intelligence is no longer a completely tacked-on system feature. Instead, it’s Siri mode, just another shooting mode within the Camera app.
That means there’s a much easier escape hatch for switching to photo shooting mode if you accidentally long-press the Camera Control.
You just swipe from Siri mode to photo mode. No frantically trying to figure out how to close Visual Intelligence and get back to your apps.
It’s a great improvement to the Camera app, Camera Control, and the whole idea of using AI features to look up information and take action with your camera.
It’s also nice if you just start with the idea that you might want to try Siri mode to do something with your camera before deciding that a saved photo would be better.
Camera Control has greatly improved by embracing simplicity over complexityCombined with iOS 26 embracing the Camera Control as just a dedicated photography app launcherand not something more advanced, this is a great direction for the iPhone’s dedicated shutter button to take.
Personally, I would sooner forfeit the Action button on my iPhone than Camera Control. I much prefer its placement for instantly launching the Camera app and snapping shots. Given the option, of course, I prefer both Camera Control and the Action button.
iOS 27 is currently in developer beta. Siri mode in the Camera app is part of Siri AI.
