A new mosque that can accommodate more than 1,500 congregants is set to be built in Bukit Bintang, Malaysia’s busiest tourist and commercial district, with construction expected to begin soon and completion targeted for early next year.
The project will be housed in a building formerly known as Bangunan Yayasan Selangor.
Its owner has agreed to a wakaf — donation — of the property for religious use, foregoing what the government described as significant commercial returns given the location.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri said the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has agreed to fund the project.
MAIWP administers public waqf and zakat funds collected from Muslims in the Federal Territories.
A Temporary Space in the InterimThe mosque will replace the Outreach Oasis Bukit Bintang community centre, which has been serving as a temporary Friday prayer venue.
Zulkifli said the arrangement, which began last Friday, marks a new chapter for Muslim residents and visitors in an area that has long lacked a dedicated mosque.
In the same remarks, Zulkifli mentioned a second, larger project in passing.
The government is planning a landmark mosque on approximately 5.6 acres of land facing the TRX financial district — a site described as one of the most prominent development corridors in the capital.
The project, referred to as Masjid Warisan and first officially announced on January 22, is intended to complement the skyline of the TRX tower.
