World Cup Top Scorer in 2026: Messi, Mbappé, Kane & Full List
1 day ago
The 2026 World Cup has reached the tail end of the group stage, and the battle for the adidas Golden Boot — awarded to the player who scores the most goals in the tournament, with assists as the tiebreaker — has already produced one of its defining storylines: Lionel Messi is now the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history, and he leads the current Golden Boot race too.
But while the 38-year-old sits clear at the top, a deep field of elite forwards is right behind him. Here's the full state of the race.
Messi: The All-Time Record, RewrittenAs of 22 June, Messi is the outright all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history. With his brace against Austria he surpassed both Miroslav Klose's men's record of 16 and Marta's overall record of 17, reaching 18 goals — making him the first male player to reach 18 at the tournament, and the greatest World Cup goalscorer, male or female.
The way he got there was emphatic. In Argentina's opener against Algeria, he scored three — the first World Cup hat-trick of his career — tying Klose as all-time leading scorer, and becoming the oldest player ever to record a hat-trick at the tournament, passing Cristiano Ronaldo's 2022 feat. Six days later against Austria, he equalled then broke the record, adding another deep into stoppage time to seal a 2-0 win. Notably, his first attempt that night came from a 9th-minute penalty that he stuttered on and put wide.
FIFA all-time World Cup leading scorers (after 22 June 2026)FIFA records Messi's breakdown as 18 goals across six World Cups: one in 2006, none in 2010, four in 2014, one in 2018, seven in 2022, and five so far in 2026.
The one prize that still eludes himFor all his records, Messi has never won the Golden Boot — Mbappé's hat-trick in the 2022 final left him one goal short. This tournament is his most realistic last shot at it, and right now he's the frontrunner. The case against: at 38, turning 39 mid-tournament, he is no longer the most prolific scorer in world football, with both Kane and Mbappé posting better goals-per-minute ratios last season. The case for: defending champions Argentina are more than capable of a deep run to the final, which would hand Messi the games — and the chances — to finally seal it.
The Main ContendersBeyond Messi, the obvious heavyweights have all enjoyed prolific starts with multiple goals in their opening games.
The Chasing PackAlso lurking: Cristiano Ronaldo, in what is surely his last World Cup with Portugal at 41, plus Lamine Yamal, Ousmane Dembélé, Raphinha and Julián Álvarez — any of whom could surge if their nations go deep.
Standings are fluid and will shift once the knockout rounds begin. Figures reflect reporting through the group stage as of 22–23 June 2026. Sources differ slightly on Messi's career international tally (Al Jazeera: 121 goals in 201 games; ESPN: 122 in 201).
