ILMUchat: An AI That Finally Understands Our Rojak Language

Everyone loves to hype up AI, but while global giants like ChatGPT and Gemini give perfectly polished answers, they don’t quite get our Malaysian vibe.

Enter ILMUchat, which is built by YTL AI Labs in collaboration with Universiti Malaya. ILMUchat (Intelek Luhur Malaysia Untukmu) is Malaysia’s very own sovereign AI assistant, and it understands Manglish.

Why Manglish matters

Most global models are trained on Western datasets. This is why when you drop a casual “Can or not?” or “You stay where ah?,” they might get confused or give you a rigidly formal response, and it can sound unnatural.

Most Malaysians don’t speak in neat, single-language sentences. Due to our multiracial makeup, we code-switch using Bahasa Melayu and English, including other local dialects like Chinese and Tamil. Sometimes we use it all in one sentence.

YTL AI Labs CEO Foong Chee Mun has pointed out that this kind of “rojak” speech pattern is exactly what trips up mainstream global models, which are trained mostly on formal, single-language data.

ILMUchat was fed vast amounts of localised data to fix that. Aside from understanding Manglish, the model is fluent in formal Bahasa Melayu, casual Bahasa Pasar, regional dialects like Kelantanese, and even ceremonial Bahasa Istana. ILMUchat also recognises Malaysian acronyms like JPJ, KWSP, LHDN, PTPTN, and MySejahtera. And it knows the mention of Georgetown refers to a location in Penang, not the one in Washington, D.C., USA.

What can you use ILMUchat for?

ILMUchat has evolved beyond the basic chatting tool. The latest version is best described as a power suite of creativity and productivity. The features can be divided into four groups: Chat, Present, Design, and Build.

1. Chats and daily life hacks

ILMUchat can help you figure out how to renew your road tax, understand a municipal guideline, or get the best local makan ideas. You can plan local trips more easily with a structured prompt filled with the lahs and mahs without worries. If you work closely with social media, the AI can help craft captions in a natural Malaysian tone.

2. Instant presentations

One of AI’s benefits is that it helps to automate some tasks. After laying out your presentation points, ILMUchat can help generate your ideas into a fully structured presentation deck. You can fine-tune the presentation points you want to get across to the way you like it.

3. Quick graphic design

Using AI to make art in any form is a touchy subject indeed. If you’re in a pinch, ILMUchat has a Design tool to help users whip up quick posters, images for social media, or generate a menu template.

4. Build without code

This is where it gets incredibly fun and useful. You can describe a basic digital tool like a personalised finance calculator, a mini-game, or a custom quiz, and ILMUchat will help you build the interactive web experience without you knowing how to code.

How to access and start using it?

The ILMUchat app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

To use from the browser, head over to ILMUchat’s official website here to sign up and launch it on your desktop. You can sign up using your email or register your interest for consumer access features.

Currently, there are two plans: ILMUchat Basic, and ILMUchat Pro for RM50 a month. The Pro version gives users unlimited access to advanced creative tools, high-tier performance, and early access to new features.

Where is the data stored?

ILMUchat is a Sovereign AI, meaning it’s fully owned, operated, and governed within national borders. The data stays right here in Malaysia instead of travelling to server farms in the US and other regions. The entire data lifecycle is tightly regulated under Malaysian jurisdiction, such as the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), and housed at YTL’s green data center in Kulai, Johor.

The Johor data center also employs enterprise-grade defense protocols. This includes continuous auditing, strict role-based access controls, and multi-layered physical security like 24/7 perimeter intrusion detection systems.
