'Elize: Shadows Of A Woman' Ending Explained: What Led To Elize’s Arrest?

Netflix’s 2026 Brazilian crime thriller Elize: Shadows of a Woman is a fictionalized retelling of a 2012 high-profile murder case. 38-year-old Elize Matsunaga was accused of murdering her husband, renowned businessman Marcos Joao Matsunaga. His dismembered body was found in a rural area of Cotia. The film does not really arrive at the murder, rather it begins with it. We witness Elize with a knife in her hand and blood on her body. She was visibly nervous, but she tried to keep her act together and get the job done. She got a little puzzled when the nanny arrived early in the morning, but she didn’t panic, she simply handed over her daughter and instructed her to stay in the playroom. Elize got busy stuffing the dismembered body parts in plastic bags and putting them in suitcases. She left her apartment with the three suitcases, and when the nanny asked her if she was traveling somewhere, she told her that the bags contained wine bottles, and she was going to drop them off. Considering the lengths she went to, Elize was surely hoping and praying that she would get away with the crime, but we already know how things ultimately ended!

Did Elize have abandonment issues?

Elize: Shadows of a Woman delves into the killer’s past to understand why she did what she did. You see, Elize had severe abandonment issues; her father abandoned her when she was a little girl, and even her mother left town after their marriage failed. Elize grew up with her grandparents before her mother returned home with a lover. But her stepfather only made her life worse. Since there was no peace at home, Elize was resolute about moving out of her hometown and living independently. She took up sex work to make money, and that was when she met Marcos. In her line of work, finding a loyal client was quite rare. She felt seen when Marcos asked her to be exclusive; here was a man ready to spoil her, and she was over the moon. This was the kind of life that Elize perhaps had always dreamt of, but she never thought it could ever become her reality. From a brand new car to a duplex apartment, Marcos knew how to pamper Elize. 

For the longest time, Elize thought that she would perhaps always be his mistress, so the day Marcos told her that he’d signed the divorce papers and he wanted to marry her, she was pleasantly surprised. For Elize, Marcos was “the perfect man,” he seemed devoted to her and with him she would never have to worry about financial trouble. A future with him was safe, secure, and fulfilling, or at least that is what Elize thought she was signing up for. What she didn’t realize was that, just as Marcos had done to his ex-wife, he could do the same to her. He was married and a father to a child when he met Elize and claimed to be in love with her. So, he wasn’t the most loyal guy out there, but I guess Elize thought it was a one-off incident; she believed that he wasn’t happy in his marriage and he had genuinely fallen in love with her. 

Elize’s past continued to torment her; she and her husband chose to keep her past occupation a secret, but Elize always feared that Marcos’ family and friends would eventually find out. She was afraid of being looked down on, of being treated differently and never really belonging in these elite circles. Things started to go out of hand when Elize discovered that Marcos had been cheating on her. She read the descriptive reviews he’d left on the escort site (it was the same website where he’d found Elize) and she was furious. She had been undergoing treatments for months so that she could get pregnant, the situation had taken a toll on her health yet she continued with the treatment because she feared that her husband would drift away if she didn’t give him a child. Marcos wasn’t really ashamed of his actions, and when Elize confronted him he was enraged that she checked his laptop without his permission. Through their conversation, you get the idea that Marcos always thought he had the upper hand in their relationship because he was “funding” Elize, and he expected her to put up with him just because he provided her a life of luxury. He even called her “damaged goods” for not bearing him a child, and during their argument, Elize felt sick, and it soon became clear that she was pregnant. Marcos promised not to cheat on her again, and he reassured her that he loved her. Elize decided to give him another chance, wanting to believe that he would change. She was terrified of the possibility of Marcos leaving her; she refused to be the helpless little girl again who was ignored by her own parents, she wanted to be sure that her husband stayed with her, always. 

How did Elize’s past affect her actions?

It wasn’t just her abandonment issues that triggered her to take the life of her husband, but also the fear of losing her daughter. Marcos hadn’t changed even after she gave birth, he had been sleeping with escorts, and it looked like he’d grown very close to one of them. In the film, she is named Danielle, but according to the Netflix series, Elize Matsunaga: Once Upon a Crime, the escort Marcos had grown close to was Karina Abreu. When Elize went through the text exchange between Danielle and Marcos, she realized that her husband had been insisting that she quit working with multiple clients, and he was ready to pay her to be exclusive. It had become quite obvious to Elize that her husband was planning on leaving her, and when she reminded him that he’d said that he would never abandon her, he stated that she was simply being hysterical. Elize quickly figured out that her husband was planning on admitting her to a mental hospital when she found a brochure for a psychiatric clinic. Elize realized that she had to gather evidence of her husband’s adultery so that she could get custody of her daughter, because divorce was clearly inevitable. 

She hired a private detective, who took pictures of Marcos and Danielle together. Elize was furious when she discovered that Marcos had gifted his mistress the same car (in the same color) that he’d bought her, and he took her to the same Japanese restaurant that they used to frequent. Elize always thought that everything that Marcos did for her was extremely special, but clearly it wasn’t, because he was ready to do the same for another woman. Elize knew that she couldn’t hold onto Marcus, but she was determined to get custody of her daughter. She’d spoken to a lawyer, who told her that if they got divorced, Marcos would most likely get custody because he came from an influential family and could offer financial security. The cheating allegation wouldn’t have impacted the court’s decision, and Elize was told that, because of her past profession, the court wouldn’t consider her a dependable parent. Elize was triggered when she saw her stepfather about to caress her daughter when she visited home, she snatched her daughter away from him and got very hostile. She was abused by her stepfather when she was young, and her mother chose not to do anything about it. Elize didn’t want her daughter to ever go through what she’d experienced as a child, and that was why she was determined to get custody to always protect her from the evils of the world. 

What led to Elize’s arrest?

Elize had scattered Marcos’ body parts all across a forested area in Cotia, hoping that no one would find him. But Marcos was an influential man, and finding him had become a top priority for the cops. Everyone hoped that it was a kidnapping case, or that Marcos would return home someday, especially after he’d made a deposit and left an email. Elize thought it was the smart thing to do, but she was unaware that the cops could track the IP and find out where the email was sent from. As soon as all the body parts were discovered, Elize figured she had to make a run for it, and she started packing her belongings along with her daughter’s. But the cops showed up at her doorstep before she could leave, and they started searching the apartment for clues. They found the same blue plastic bags that were used to wrap the dismembered body parts, and seeing how nervous Elize got, the cops figured she was the killer. She was taken to the station, and while she tried to lie at first, she eventually confessed. She realized that whatever story she could come up with wouldn’t really last in court. There was surveillance footage showing Elize leaving her apartment with three suitcases and returning home empty-handed. And just the day before his disappearance, Marcos was last seen returning to his apartment with a pizza box, which meant that he’d never left the apartment. Elize confessed to the crime, and admitted that she’d shot her husband in a fit of rage. 

Which version of the truth did the film lean on?

Elize: Shadows of a Woman doesn’t delve into the theory proposed by the prosecutors, it sticks to the version that Elize had confessed. Even the jury thought it was a crime of passion, and not a premeditated murder. The docu-series discusses what the prosecutors had suggested: they believed that the angle of the bullet wound confirmed that Marcos was shot within close proximity, and he’d even tried to duck but was ultimately killed. They thought that after Marcos returned to his apartment with the pizza, he found Elize with a gun standing at the door, which also meant that she’d planned on killing him and came up with the opportunity to execute it. They accused her of planning the murder for money; Marcos’ family company, Yoki, was set to be acquired by an American company, and it was assumed that Marcos would lead the company after his father retired. Also, the fact that Elize had insisted on being a part of the Matsunaga family even after her husband’s death further resulted in the accusation. But the version that Elize had told the cops (the one that we witness in the film) is different. 

Elize and Marcos got into a heated argument; he wanted her to believe that he was busy with work, which was why he couldn’t spend time with his family, and Elize retorted back, saying that the company was his father’s, and his brother did all the heavy lifting while he slacked off. Marcos was infuriated, but instead of engaging he went downstairs to get the pizza. When he returned home, Elize showed him the pictures that the private detective had taken of him and Danielle, and that resulted in more arguments. Marcos told Elize that she simply got lucky because he’d decided to marry her, and when she asked for a divorce and the custody of her daughter, he told her that she wasn’t mentally sound enough to look after her. Elize accused him of being a pervert who paid sex workers because the transactional nature of the relationship allowed him to feel like a “man.” Marcos was fuming with rage, and he ended up slapping Elize, but she refused to back off. Instead, she went to the arms room, where they kept their hunting gear and she grabbed a handgun and pointed it at Marcos. He didn’t think she had it in her to kill him. He pushed her to the edge when he mentioned her stepfather and insinuated that she deserved to be abused, and that was when she pulled the trigger and shot him in the head. 

In Elize: Shadows of a Woman’s ending, Elize Matsunaga was taken into custody after she confessed, and she was found guilty by the court of murdering her husband and concealing his body. The court didn’t think her action was motivated by revenge or money, she was initially sentenced to 20 years in prison, but as a result of her good conduct in 2019, it was reduced to 16 years 3 months. After serving 10 years, she was granted parole, but she never really got the chance to reunite with her daughter. Elize thought if she confessed then she would get a reduced sentence, and eventually get the chance to be with her daughter. But the Matsunaga family broke all ties with her and refused to let Elize even see any photograph of her daughter. The film leaves it up to the audience to decide if Elize deserves to be forgiven, and if she should be kept away from her daughter forever. The film unfolds from Elize’s perspective, so I think it’s pretty obvious that the viewers might sympathize with her, but then again there’s no denying that she has committed a grave crime, and that’s also communicated through the film. Elize’s past affected her present, perhaps if she had someone to confide in and had gotten help, then things could’ve been different. But at the end of the day, she killed her husband, and her desperation to get custody of her daughter wasn’t quite the justification. People are cheated on, marriages often break, but that doesn’t mean one will pull the trigger and deal with it their own way.
