'Silo' Season 3 Episode 6 Recap & Ending Explained: Who Recruited Helen & Daniel?

In Silo Season 3 episode 5, it was revealed that, soon after Camille became the Head of IT, Robert was tasked with killing either Bernard or Juliette in order to maintain peace and calm amongst the denizens. Since Bernard was deemed much more likely to regain consciousness, Robert chose to take him out, while leaving Juliette to the mercy of the memory-suppression drugs. But Robert didn’t actually kill Bernard, because he knew a lot about the other silos, how Silo 18 functioned, and what the Safeguard Protocol was actually all about; with the help of Martha and Carla, Robert faked Bernard’s death, and transported him to the tent in the Digger Void. Martha nursed Bernard back to health and, during that period, Bernard taught Martha how to reconfigure the radio so that she could tune into the chatter of all the other silos. In addition to all that, Robert orchestrated the recovery of Juliette’s memories. He employed Amy to give her fake memory-suppression pills, and he got Regina to collect Juliette’s old items. When Juliette touched those items, her memory wasn’t restored; that said, when Robert gave her back her PEZ dispenser, that’s when she remembered everything. While all this was going on, Carla revealed to Paul that someone had been stealing bulbs (which were used as grow lights) from Critical Supply, which meant that they had very limited time on their hands before they ran out of food. In the flashback section of the narrative, the van that Helen and Danny were traveling in was remotely hijacked by someone or something, and they began heading to an unknown destination. What happened next? Let’s find out.

The Outsiders Partake In A Brainstorming Session

Camille meets up with Robert at the under-repair section of the stairwell, and asks him about how Juliette managed to give him the slip. Robert obviously cooks up some stupid lie and, initially, it’s unclear if Camille believes it or not. But she takes Robert off the case (of arresting Juliette) and tells him to “spend time” with Anthony, by which she means that she wants somebody to be by Anthony’s side if the Safeguard Protocol activates when the Algorithm realizes that Juliette is actually missing. In addition to that, she tells Emerson to keep an eye on Robert for his own safety, which shows that Camille doesn’t blindly trust Robert anymore. Knox and Shirley bring Bernard to Martha’s room, and Lukas and Kennedy are shocked to learn that he’s alive and breathing. Martha asks Knox and Shirley if anyone spotted them during their expedition from the Digger Void to her room; Knox says that Teddy saw them but, I guess, he is trustworthy enough to keep a secret. Bernard says that he is glad to see that Lukas has survived the rebellion and the subsequent manhunt. Martha expresses surprise that Bernard has managed to survive the trip to her chambers. Bernard jokes about Martha feeling thankful that he is still alive. This is a very Loki-esque (the Marvel one) situation, where a mass-murderer (or at least one who is capable of mass murder) is being redeemed before our eyes by being important and goofy. Anyway, this reunion party is interrupted by Juliette, who barges into the room and announces that she remembers everything. While she is giving everyone the lowdown about the Safeguard Protocol and the pipe that could be used to poison everyone whenever the Algorithm (or those in Silo 1) wants to, Emerson informs Camille that Juliette is at Martha’s place, and Camille and the raiders start rushing to that spot. Lukas says that he had managed to figure out the pipes or lines going into IT and Judicial were coming from somewhere outside the silo. He went to the mines to see what was the purpose of those pipes or where they came from, and he almost found out what the “line” going to IT did, but that’s when Camille unleashed the rat-killing gas. Bernard says that the line from IT is connected to Silo 1, and it provides electricity; hence, even when the generator stops, IT stays lit. Which means that the pipe that’s in Judicial is for the implementation of the Safeguard Protocol. Juliette says that that might be true, because that’s the same conclusion Solo/Jimmy had arrived at.

Juliette Surrenders Herself To Save Bernard

When Bernard asks Juliette what Jimmy told her about the exact location of the entrypoint of this pipe in Judicial, she draws a blank. She knows that Jimmy has the blueprint for that, but she can’t remember it. Knox hypothesizes that if Silo 17 has a blueprint, they must have a blueprint here too. Lukas says that if they do have a blueprint, it must be in the reconstructed hard drive (the reconstruction was done by Lukas) that’s stored in IT; which means that it’s virtually inaccessible. And the only person with access to IT, while also being on the side of the Outsiders, is Robert. Since Robert is busy taking care of Anthony, and he is also being followed by Emerson, asking him to break into IT for the hard drive would be stupidity. Shirley wonders if they can communicate with Jimmy and ask him where to look in Judicial; because if the layout of all the silos are the same, the Safeguard pipe in 18 will be in the same place as it is in 17. However, Juliette shoots down that approach by saying that Jimmy doesn’t have a radio they can use to communicate with him. This brainstorming session comes to an end when Teddy barges into the room to inform them that Camille is coming; which means that Bernard has to be moved again. In order to prevent that from happening, because Bernard is really frail, Juliette sacrifices herself to Camille. That said, Juliette advises Camille to take her somewhere where there are no cameras so that they can have a chat about everything that she remembers. Camille obliges Juliette’s request and Juliette confronts her about the Algorithm. Juliette then brings up the topic of Silo 17, its survivors, and the fact that she promised them that she’d bring them to Silo 18. Camille thinks that that’s a preposterous plan, which is why Juliette urges Camille to let her put forth that request in front of the Algorithm and let it decide. When Camille refuses to entertain that request, Juliette reminds Camille of the hold she has over the public, and how she can plunge the silo into chaos if her demands aren’t met. That compels Camille to oblige Juliette’s request, and she takes her to the Vault.

Shirley And Knox Agree To Go To Silo 17

Juliette asks the Algorithm if she can bring the residents of Silo 17 to Silo 18 before they die. The Algorithm denies the request; so, Juliette says that she is willing to start consuming the memory-suppression drugs if that stops the Algorithm from perceiving her as a threat; she’s also okay with giving those drugs to the Silo 17 kids so that they aren’t a threat to Silo 18 either. That’s something that the Algorithm finds acceptable, but Camille thinks that Juliette has some kinda ulterior motive that she isn’t revealing. Juliette says that, after drugging her for three months, Camille has no right to question anybody’s honesty. She makes it clear that, regardless of what Camille thinks about her, she is going to get those kids back, and after that, she’ll go back to being Camille’s puppet mayor. Juliette goes to Martha’s and tells her about her interaction with the Algorithm and her plan to rescue the denizens of Silo 17. Bernard suggests that they send two engineers (the maximum number of rescuers that the Algorithm has agreed to send outside is two), which means that he is pointing towards Knox and Shirley. Juliette doesn’t know how she can ask them to go on a potential suicide mission, but Martha tells her to let them decide if they wanna go or not. In the meantime, Martha and Bernard have a chat about good luck charms, Martha letting Bernard live because he had a hand in Juliette’s survival, Bernard’s childhood, and Carla’s jokes. When Juliette puts forth her request to Shirley and Knox, he immediately says “no,” because he doesn’t want to put Shirley and their unborn child’s lives at risk. Shirley tells Juliette to wait outside for a moment so that she can have a proper tiff with Knox. Once they agree that both of them are gonna take the trip to Silo 17, they inform Juliette about it, and Juliette heaves a massive sigh of relief. Camille returns to her room to see Robert and Anthony sitting in complete silence. Why? Because Anthony has been accused of theft and lying; and the school has said that if Anthony repeats this kinda behavior, he’ll be sent to work in Supply. Camille reprimands Anthony and tells him to go to his bedroom so that she can discuss this matter with Robert. Robert assures Camille that she has nothing to worry about, because the son of the head of IT and the head of Judicial won’t be sent to work in Supply. Camille doesn’t think that that sets a good example for Anthony. Robert says that he has done everything he can to show Anthony that one needs to be apologetic when they make a mistake; beyond that, Anthony’s actions are not in his control. Camille switches topics and essentially orders Robert to stop helping the Outsiders, or else he might have to be severely punished.

Camille And The Algorithm Betray Juliette

Camille heads back to the Vault to tell the Algorithm that it is making a mistake by allowing Juliette to perform a rescue op. The Algorithm doesn’t agree with Camille’s assessment, which really aggravates her and causes her to go on a rant about how she seems to be failing as a mother, a wife, and the head of IT. Oddly enough, the Algorithm empathizes with Camille’s plight and tells her to take some time off so that she can re-center herself; Camille appreciates that sentiment. Does she follow that advice? Nope. She goes to Juliette’s room and gets into an argument with her about sending Knox and Shirley to Silo 17 when they need to supervise the repair of the stairs. Juliette says that, in that case, she is gonna send Lukas and Kennedy. This puts Camille in a pickle, because she wants Lukas and Kennedy dead; so, they are expendable enough to go outside. And since they are expendable enough to go outside, Camille can’t object to the rescue op (which is what she is trying to do, because she believes that the rescue op will destabilize the silo). Therefore, she decides to go ahead with her plan to dump the “Vitamin D” into the water supply system; which is something that she was initially looking to avoid because wiping out everyone’s memories is criminal (now she knows what it means to walk in Bernard’s shoes, I guess). When Camille and Juliette return to the Vault to announce the candidates who will be going to Silo 17, the latter announces Knox and Shirley’s names. When that request is denied, Juliette submits Lukas and Kennedy’s names. Their candidature is approved by the Algorithm. Once Juliette has left the Vault, the Algorithm tells Camille that Lukas and Kennedy will never make it to Silo 17. The Algorithm thinks that Juliette doesn’t just want to save the kids in Silo 17; she’s after something else. Well, the Algorithm is correct; she wants to deactivate the Safeguard Protocol, and one of the only ways to do that is by getting the blueprint from that silo. The Algorithm doesn’t know that, obviously, which is why it secretly endorses Camille’s move to introduce the “Vitamin D” into the water supply. Camille says that it has already been done, and eventually, the denizens of Silo 18, including Camille, will forget what they’ve been fighting for or what’s the purpose of their lives.

Paul Interrogates Knox

Paul confides in Hank about the bulb theft situation, and that they have two years left before things go sideways in an irreparable fashion. Hank wonders what they can do about this situation. Paul says that, firstly, they should keep this matter to themselves; secondly, they should find Orla’s killer, and hopefully that’s gonna lead them to the bulb thief. Hank suggests that they look for the bulb thief, because that might lead them to Orla’s killer. Yeah, it’s basically the same thing, but if they look for a thief, they have a better chance at surviving a retaliation from them, because what’s the most that a thief can do? If they go after a killer, their chances of getting slimed are really high, because someone who killed Orla won’t hesitate before killing Paul and Hank. Paul’s expression shows that he likes the second option more than the first one. On that note, they head over to Mark’s workplace, and Mark says that he doesn’t know anything about a bulb thief. After some bickering, Paul says that he’s gonna give Mark the names of the raiders who killed his friend, and in exchange, Mark has to point them in the direction of the bulb thief. Mark thinks that that’s a fair trade, and he tells Paul and Hank that Knox will have some knowledge of this thief, because his father used to steal stuff from Supply. Hence, they go to Knox to question him about his dad and whether or not he or Knox have been stealing from Critical Supply, which understandably angers Knox. Hank tries to bring down the temperature by revealing the fact that they are looking into the murder of Orla, but when Paul doesn’t believe that Knox doesn’t have any idea who Orla is, things get heated up again. Shirley and Hank literally pull Paul and Knox away from each other before things escalate into a fight.

Knox’s Father Is Dead

Hank asks Paul if there’s any alternative method that they can try to solve this mystery, and Paul says something about tracking Glenda and Orla’s movements. They go to Emerson’s for info on this matter, and she says that the secret monitoring room has been shut down. Paul doesn’t believe that, and he compels Emerson to take him to the surveillance room. Once they get there, Paul orders Emerson’s subordinates to exit the room so that only he, Hank, and Emerson can look at the footage of Orla and Glenda. They learn two things here: firstly, Camille and Emerson are behind the gas at the mines, and secondly, on the day of the incident, Glenda traveled from the mines to Supply in ten minutes (which is impossible). Going back to Shirley and Knox, she asks him why he reacted so violently when Paul brought up his dad. Knox makes it clear that he didn’t get angry at Paul because he has very fond memories of his father. His mother was the one who took care of him, while his father spent most of his time in the mines for breaking the Pact by stealing or trading stuff. He was an absent father, and when he eventually returned home, he acted like an absolute douchebag, and Knox dislikes the insinuation that he is anything like his dad. Shirley appreciates the fact that Knox has shared this aspect of his life with her, but now that he has gotten it off his chest, she advises him to help out Paul, because he’s trying to get justice for Orla. On that note, the focus of the episode shifts to the mines, where Ed is giving a speech to all those who have been punished to work in the mines after breaking the Pact. Once Ed is done speaking his piece, Knox approaches him and asks him to take him to his dad. That’s when Ed reveals that Knox’s dad died two years ago.

Helen And Daniel Go On A Road Trip

Helen and Daniel spend most of this episode trapped in that autodriving van, which is increasing its speed every other second. They take out the key and throw it out of the window in the hopes that that’s gonna get the van to stop, but it doesn’t work. Helen hypothesizes that this is what might have happened to Charlotte’s squadron; they lost control of their planes too, and it seemed like someone else was controlling them. Daniel wonders how someone from Iran could be remotely driving a car in the USA, but the answer to Daniel’s question is in his very question: it’s not someone from Iran that took down the planes or is maneuvering the van; this is the handiwork of Americans. Neither of them jump to that conclusion, and Helen even puts forth the theory that it’s the work of some hackers, and Stensen was on the Nimitz to monitor any such attack on Charlotte’s squadron (which is quite stupid, because he was probably on the Nimitz to orchestrate the attack on the planes, not prevent it). Daniel re-focuses on bringing the van to a stop by accessing the wire panel underneath the steering wheel and triggering the brakes, but that doesn’t work, and he ends up hurting himself in the process. Helen patches him up, and he goes back to trying to get the car to stop. Helen spots a car overtaking them, and she tries to flag them down and ask them to get help, but they just speed off. Helen starts wondering if someone from Daniel’s workplace will come looking for him; Daniel says that, even if somebody at work cares about him that much, it’ll still take them a day or two to even realize that he is missing. Helen asks if Charlotte might flag Daniel’s disappearance, but Daniel doesn’t think that that’s happening, because she forgets about him between their meet-ups. Helen says that nobody from her side will be looking for her either; so that option is gone out of the window. Daniel thinks that whoever has hijacked the van could have killed them several hours ago; the fact that they haven’t been turned into roadkill means that the hijacker needs them. Helen doesn’t share Daniel’s optimism, because she believes that even if Daniel is right, the hijacker’s purpose for them might be something nefarious.

Senator Thurman Recruits Helen And Daniel 

Daniel asks Helen about the alleged journalistic fraud that she had committed while at the Post. Helen says that she did a piece on drug addiction among congressional staffers. She was pressured into revealing one of her sources (the fake name that Helen had used to refer to her source was Sharon), especially when it was insinuated that the Speaker of the House was using, but she didn’t succumb to that bullying. By process of elimination, Gillian Aikens, who worked in the Speaker’s office, became the prime accused of that exposé. The problem was that Gillian was actually Helen’s source. So, in order to save Gillian, Helen confessed that her write-up was baseless, and that’s why she was fired from the Post for “journalistic fraud” (kinda mirrors how Juliette allows herself to get caught by Camille to save Bernard). Daniel realizes that he was wrong for thinking that Helen was trying to get her job back because she was greedy; she wanted it back because it was taken from her in an unfair manner. He doesn’t apologize for mischaracterizing her, but he does start flirting with her, probably to show that he has warmed up to her. While they are doing that, they notice cop cars and cop bikes surrounding their vehicle. One of those vehicles has Henry in it. No, they are not there to stop the van; they are there to escort it to its destination.

In episode 6’s ending, Henry, Helen, and Daniel arrive at an airport hangar. Helen and Daniel are approached by Senator Thurman, who asks them if they are interested in saving the world. What’s that all about? Why would Helen and Daniel agree to work with Senator Thurman? Is Thurman behind the attack on Charlotte’s squadron? And how exactly are they gonna save the world? We know that Daniel is a master of drilling into the Earth. Hence, it’s not a stretch to assume that Thurman and Henry want to use his expertise to build the silos that are gonna save a major chunk of Earth’s population from nuclear annihilation. Now, I believe that Thurman and Henry are not gonna come clean about the attack on Charlotte’s squadron. I think the same tech that was used to take down Charlotte and her colleagues was used to remotely maneuver that van. But Thurman and Henry are gonna de-link the two events and make it seem like Charlotte and her friends were attacked by Iran (even though it was probably done by the USA to test their nanotech), and they’ll use that incident to compel Daniel to help them build the silos, because “the end is imminent” or some other nonsense like that. What’s Helen’s job here? Propaganda, of course. The government is gonna need money and manpower to build these silos; and they’ll need to convince the folks that their lives are in danger. Therefore, it’s entirely possible that Helen’s journalistic expertise will be used for that purpose. And the reason why I think that they’ll end up working for the government is because the PEZ dispenser ends up in Silo 18. What do you think is gonna happen?
