College student charged with causing death of newborn baby girl

A FEMALE college student was charged in the Kluang Magistrate's Court today on charges of murdering a newborn baby girl last week.

However, no plea was recorded from the accused, Nurshazwen Mohd Idris, 19, after the charge was read before Magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman because murder falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Based on the charge sheet, the accused caused the death of a newborn baby girl at a house in Taman Setia Mutiara at about 10 am, July 29.

The charge was brought under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment for not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years.

If not sentenced to death, she will be subject to whipping of not less than 12 times, if convicted.

Prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Noratini Nik Aznan, who said that no bail offer was given as the offence was non-bailable.

The court then set October 8 as the date for mention of the case pending the autopsy and chemistry reports.

On Thursday, Kluang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh, reportedly said that a 19-year-old male student who was previously remanded in connection with the same case would be released and used as a prosecution witness.

On Wednesday, the male student involved was remanded for a day after being remanded for seven days starting July 30 to assist in investigations under Sections 302 and 315 of the Penal Code.

Earlier, on July 30, Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad reportedly said that police had arrested a couple who were also college students, both aged 19, to assist investigations into the case.

He said police received a report at 1 pm regarding a student admitted to the Enche Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital (HEBHK) after giving birth.

Ab Rahaman said, based on the investigation, the baby was found by the college's teaching staff, and further examination at HEBHK found that there was another baby (twin) in the female student's womb, which was later safely delivered. – August 7, 2026
