KUCHING, Aug 8: What started as a fishing competition has become a family and community affair, with 150 participants turning up for the third edition of the Kuching Festival event.
Speaking to reporters at the event today, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the growing participation showed that fishing was about more than simply landing a catch, with many participants bringing along their partners, spouses and entire families.
“Through the last two years’ experience, you can actually see that fishing is not just fishing. You can see the family bonding,” he said.
Wee said the event reflected MBKS’ efforts to create activities that bring people together and strengthen their sense of belonging to the city.
“Basic things are the people. Whatever policies, whatever infrastructure and all that, all these are built for the people,” he said.
He added that the fishing competition was among the activities aimed at fostering stronger community ties with participants gathering not only to compete but also to spend time with their families and friends.
The fishing competition offers RM2,500 and a trophy for the eventual winner, while the second and third-placed participants are set to receive RM1,750 and RM750 respectively, along with trophies.
Another 20 participants will also be eligible for RM50 consolation prizes each.
The competition is being held as part of the ongoing Kuching Festival, which continues until Aug 16. — DayakDaily
