Prominent banking icon Azlan Hashim passes away

SHAH ALAM - Banking figure Datuk Azlan Hashim, who was the younger brother to AMMB Holdings Bhd (AmBank Group) founder and former chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim, passed away at the age of 85.

Azlan was remembered as among the key leaders who played an important role in the development of AmBank Group following over three decades of service with the banking group.

AmBank expressed its deep sadness over the passing of the late figure, describing him as a respected former leader who made significant contributions to the group's history.

"Throughout his distinguished career spanning over three decades with the group, he held several key leadership positions across subsidiaries and group-related entities.

"His dedicated service, authoritative leadership and invaluable contributions towards the governance, growth and development of the group will always be remembered by the AmBank family," it said in a Facebook post on Aug 10.

He began his career with the group on July 5, 1982 when he joined the board of directors of Arab Malaysian Development Bank Berhad, now known as AmInvestment Bank Berhad.

He was later appointed as AmSecurities Sdn Bhd chairman from Oct 10, 1986 to March 3, 2007 before joining the board of directors of AmBank on Feb 12, 1992.

He served as AmBank deputy chairman until his retirement on Aug 20, 2015.

Throughout his tenure, he also held several leadership positions in subsidiaries and entities related to AmBank Group.

Among them, he served as a director of Arab Malaysian Eagle Assurance Berhad, now known as AmMetLife Insurance Berhad, from March 1, 1985 to March 28, 2006, having also held the positions of chairman and deputy chairman during that period.

He was also a director of AmBank Islamic from Aug 1, 1994 to Dec 19, 2003, and AmREIT Managers Sdn Bhd from Aug 24, 2008 to Aug 12, 2015.

In addition, he served on the board of trustees of AmGroup Foundation since its establishment on Dec 18, 1985.
