'Reacher' Season 4 Episode 1 Recap: Who Is Lila Hoth?
Episode 1 of Reacher Season 4 opens with the revelation that Jack Reacher is currently in Philadelphia. At around 2 AM in the morning, he takes the subway. There are a handful of people in the bogey he is in, and one of them seems to be, as kids these days like to say, tweaking. Given how her hands are inside a bag, Reacher assumes that she has a bomb. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the woman reveals that she isn’t actually carrying a bomb, but a gun, which she uses on herself as soon as Reacher says that he is a cop. In his defense, there was no time to explain that he wasn’t a regular cop but a former member of the U.S. military police. But given how the woman kills herself after learning that he is with the police, it tells him that whoever is or was after her is associated with some kinda law enforcement agency. Since he is the last person that the deceased communicated with, he is brought into the office of the Philadelphia Police 40th District for questioning. Detectives Shaun Docherty and Tamara Green are assigned to this case, and they learn really quickly that Reacher isn’t very cooperative. After toying with the detectives for a while, Reacher gets down to brass tacks and lets them know why he approached this woman, Anna Merrick. He even gives them a good idea of all the witnesses that were present in that carriage, which brings all three of them to the realization that there’s one person from the crime scene who hasn’t been brought in for questioning. While Reacher is parsing through these details, he figures out that the detectives are merely stalling until the Feds arrive and take over the case. Why? Because Anna was a federal government employee. Given how Reacher is interested in learning from the Feds about the circumstances that led Anna to take such a drastic action, and (as pointed out by Shaun) since Reacher feels guilty for pushing Anna over the edge, he agrees to stay back at the station. What happens next? Let’s find out.
Spoiler Alert
Reacher Is Questioned By The FedsWhile waiting for the Feds to arrive, and stuffing his face with a Philly cheesesteak, Jack Reacher tries to establish a rapport with Tamara, because she’s clearly the underdog of that department. Before Tamara can reciprocate Reacher’s efforts to build a bond with her, Officer Jacob Merrick walks into the station; and Reacher immediately assumes that Jacob might have some connection to the deceased. He is not allowed to explore that angle, as Tamara advises Reacher to finish his food and get ready for his interview with the Feds. Since the Feds don’t give any names (they just stare at him silently as if that’s gonna intimidate him), Reacher labels them Snap, Crackle, and Pop. As if that’s not demeaning enough, he analyzes the hell out of them, thereby prompting the Feds to start sweating, which is something that they had hoped Reacher would be doing at the mere sight of the Feds. The Feds try to turn the tables on Reacher, but they are so amateurish that they let slip the fact that Anna was carrying something important; and they wanna know if she had passed it onto Reacher for safekeeping. Once Reacher figures that part out, he brings the interview to an end, bids farewell to Tamara, and leaves the building. That’s when he is approached by two suspicious-looking dudes who, without even introducing themselves, ask Reacher if Anna gave something to him prior to her death, and whether or not he has passed it on to the cops or the Feds. Reacher counter-questions them to find out what exactly they are looking for, and since these dudes are more amateurish than the Feds, they reveal that they are looking for a flash drive. Reacher asks them who their boss is, which prompts the dudes to manhandle Reacher, which is never a good idea unless you are twice Reacher’s size, or so skilled at hand-to-hand combat that you can take down a guy twice your size. Reacher takes down the guys without breaking a sweat. Then he notices Jacob sitting in the diner across the street and approaches him.
Reacher Forms A Bond With JacobJacob confirms that Anna was his sister, but he doesn’t know anything about a thumb drive, and he is still in denial that that his sister has died by suicide. Reacher slowly and steadily manages to make Jacob come to terms with reality, and he learns that Jacob was the one who had given the gun to her (for self-defence), that they’d had a rough childhood, they were both adopted, they had a great relationship, and that Jacob had helped raise Ben, his nephew (who still doesn’t know that his mother is dead). Upon further questioning, Reacher learns that Anna used to work in human resources at the army department of the Federal Government, and even though that sounds boring, Anna apparently used to enjoy her job. Reacher brings this conversation to an end when he sees the two guys that tried to manhandle him return to the spot after recuperating from the beatdown that they had just received. Reacher asks Jacob if he recognizes those guys outside; Jacob says that he has no clue who they are. Reacher buys a flash drive from a kid working in that diner, and he tells Jacob that he is gonna pretend that it’s the flash drive that Anna had given him; hopefully, that’s gonna motivate those two henchmen to take him to their boss, and he’ll be able to get some idea of the mess Anna was involved in prior to her death. Jacob wants to come with Reacher, but he tells Jacob to stay put and keep trying to get in touch with Ben, because he might either know something about Anna’s work or he might be in danger; and he promises he’ll be back at the diner in 90 minutes. The fake flash drive trick works, by the way, and the henchmen take Reacher to a park and introduce him to two women. The younger of the two claims that she is Lila Hoth, the older woman is Amisha Hoth, and the henchmen are Lila’s cousins.
Reacher Meets LilaLila says that, some time in the ’90s in Indonesia, Amisha met a US Delta Force Soldier named John, and they had an affair, and she is the result of that entanglement. Lila reveals that she suffers from leukemia and she needs a bone marrow transplant to get better. Amisha can’t help her because she has kidney disease. Hence, Lila’s only option is finding John and convincing him to save her. She tried doing her own investigation but, initially, that only led her to dead-ends. Eventually, she got in touch with Anna, who related to Lila’s plight because she understood her frustration with not knowing one’s biological parents, as she herself was adopted, and since Ben’s parentage was a question mark. Therefore, Anna decided to do some digging for Lila and found out that the “John” Lila was looking for was Congressman John Sampson. He is a presidential nominee, and he doesn’t wanna talk about his affair in Indonesia because it might hurt his chances of winning the election. Reacher surmises that Lila intends to blackmail John with whatever information Anna had stolen from the Pentagon via that flash drive, and get him to do that bone marrow transplant. Anna was supposed to meet Lila at the hotel she and her mother are staying, but she never showed up and then died by suicide. Lila doesn’t know what might have prompted Anna to take that step, but it seemingly doesn’t matter to her anymore; she just wants the drive. That’s when Reacher reveals that the flash drive he is carrying is a fake, and he has used it to acquire all that info from Lila. Lila doesn’t seem all that irked by that revelation, because she understands that Reacher is trying to solve this mystery. Hence, she gives him the room number of the hotel she is staying in and her phone number so that he can get in touch with her once he learns something else about the drive (the real one).
Reacher Is Attacked In The LibraryJack Reacher returns to the diner and learns that Jacob still has no clue regarding Ben’s whereabouts. Reacher gives him the lowdown about everything he has learnt about Anna, and Jacob says that he is gonna finish what Anna started; he is gonna find all the dirt he can on John. Reacher agrees to help him out with that, because he thinks this is important business. We get a brief look at Tamara getting into a tiff with Snap, Crackle, and Pop, because they are going through her stuff on her table without her permission. Shaun advises Tamara to give the Feds all the files she has on Anna because their captain has signed off on it; Tamara has no option but to comply. Once the Feds have left, Shaun wonders why Tamara is so invested in this case; Tamara clarifies that she doesn’t care a lot about Anna, she just wants her boundaries to be respected. Going back to Reacher and Jacob, they go to the public library to dig up whatever they can about John. Reacher quickly figures out that the publicly available stuff about John is heavily sanitized. With the librarian’s permission, Reacher heads to the basement to look through the military archives for clues. That’s where he is ambushed by an assassin who wants the drive, which leads to a very well-done fight between the two. Things end on a bloody note as Reacher crushes the assassin to death with the help of the movable library shelves, and then dumps the body in the coal room. Reacher tells Jacob that they need to get to Lila immediately, because if he has been attacked, she is in danger as well.
Reacher Is AbductedReacher tries calling Lila, but since she is in the shower, she can’t get to her phone. As predicted by Reacher, an assassin gets to Lila’s hotel room, but thankfully, he is unable to do much harm to Lila because Reacher gets a hold of the assassin (Jacob tries to help but he gets knocked out) and chucks him out of the window. The assassin survives the fall and joins his friends, who open fire at Lila’s room. Reacher and Lila are mostly unhurt, and Jacob’s nose is broken. Reacher advises Lila to take her family, hide somewhere else, and make sure that they deal only in cash, because digital transactions can be traced. In the meantime, Reacher and Jacob return to the Philly PD building to get a hold of Tamara. While waiting for her to clock out, Jacob learns from one of Ben’s friends that he has gone missing, which is another headache on top of all the headaches they are currently dealing with. Reacher puts that on the backburner and approaches Tamara to question her about the flash drive. That’s when he learns that the Feds are looking for it too. Tamara has no idea where it is, because Anna didn’t have it on her when she died. Reacher says that he has been attacked twice in the last few hours over that thing; he lies about the status of the attackers. Tamara understands that this is some shifty business, and since the Feds are involved, she doesn’t want to touch it. Reacher tells Jacob that they need to get to DC to talk to John. Jacob says that driving there in his patrol vehicle is impossible; so, they decide to meet at the train station after Jacob has returned his vehicle to his precinct in New Jersey. However, Reacher never makes it to the station because, in the ending of episode 1, soon after parting ways with Jacob, Reacher is abducted by some guys in suits, possibly CIA.
