Having a stable relationship is one of the best things you can have in your life and no matter how tricky situations get, it is better if you trust in your partner. Starring Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandana and Kriti Sanon, “Cocktail 2” tells the story of Diya and Kunal, a longtime couple, who learn it the hard way. Kunal is a hardworking restaurant owner who uses his charm to keep the customers glued to their seats. His girlfriend, Diya, is usually the go-to person who plans stuff, including what to wear in wedding parties. Wherever they go, their parents and relatives keep bugging them about getting married, which they feel absolutely hard to deal with.

Why Does Diya Suspect That Kunal May Be Cheating?Diya knows Kunal for ages; the two of them have spent sixteen years together and all this time, she has never had a hunch about him cheating. However, when their mutual friends talk about how Ruhi caught her partner Adi cheating on her just because he forgot to delete the secret messages with his intern, Kunal makes fun of his stupidity. Just like any normal person, he could have addressed the infidelity issue first, and this is why Diya grows furious. Well, two things may be true, if you consider Kunal’s perspective; first, he is drunk, and second, he is trying to make fun of Adi since he considers himself way smarter. Although Kunal’s joke is slightly insensitive, Diya also fails to realize that he is just trying to lighten everyone’s moods, including hers. Diya’s suspicion proves that she still doesn’t trust Kunal at all; she overreacts and overthinks about situations that have not occurred yet. She constantly fears that Kunal is probably having an affair with his masseuse or the new Italian chef at his restaurant, when he just tries to survive the day.
Why Does Diya Convince Ally To Seduce Kunal?Diya’s doubt makes her stop believing in Kunal, which is why, when she meets her old friend Ally in Sicily, she devises a plan to test her boyfriend. While poor Kunal just wants to have fun with his girlfriend in Sicily, Diya wants him to prove his loyalty to her. While it is understandable that Diya is done being asked by seniors about marrying Kunal but she has no right to use her friend like a pawn just to prove a point. Ally, who has seen a happy couple, genuinely asks Diya about marriage and she overthinks the situation because of that one joke. Diya thinks that Kunal probably does not want to commit since he thinks of the marriage as a burden. She also develops this weird doubt where she feels that Kunal is habitually with her, not because he loves her. It is frustrating to see that Diya, who clearly spends less time with Kunal due to work, wants him to be seduced by a single, party-holic, fun-loving woman like Ally, who doesn’t mind casual hookups. Fortunately, Kunal pushes Ally away a couple of times, and even after learning all that, Diya is not ready to stop. She even tries psychological tricks, which include ragebaiting, shouting at Kunal and pushing him away, to make him seek comfort from Ally.
What Pushes Ally To Fall In Love With Kunal?Ally did not want to believe in love since she never got someone who could be perfect for her. But that doesn’t mean that she is not fit to harbor feelings for someone in her heart, if that person turns out to be good. For Ally, that person turns out to be Kunal. He is a lovely guy, knows his boundaries, cooks well and has a heart of gold. There are several points in time when Ally falls in love with Kunal, starting from that impromptu hug in the car. Of course, it is purely coincidental, but that is the first time when Ally’s heart melts for that man, even though she is basically testing his loyalty for Diya. Their time at the vineyard is magical and later, Kunal ups the ante for Ally by cooking her favorite Indian meal, exclusively for her. Ally again falls in love when Kunal visits the beach with her; all this time, whenever she acts to be in love, it becomes real. She falls for Kunal and even invites him to spend the night with her, but he turns her down – when Diya reaches the villa, she grows happier to know that her boyfriend has passed the test, unbeknownst to the damage she has caused.
Does Ally Deliberately Try To Sabotage Kunal And Diya’s Wedding?Ally realizes that Kunal has always acted according to Diya’s choices. Even when they get engaged, it is Diya who proposes to Kunal, that too, on her own terms. Ally finds it problematic for Kunal and decides to do something about it since she feels that he is not ready to prioritize his own choices. She musters up the courage and proposes to Kunal at night, when both of them are talking on the rooftop. Although Kunal does not say anything, Ally’s advances create a stir in his mind and it stays no matter how hard he tries to forget. She deliberately causes havoc in the wedding when she tries to insult Diya’s idea of holding a “youngster’s party” (a toned down Bachelorette party) and Kunal throws her off when he claims that it is his idea. Ally visits Kunal’s bachelorette party (she is supposed to stay by Diya’s side) to stay by him and takes away Diya’s phone just to create a misunderstanding between the couple. Ally also gets into a head on competition with Diya to win Kunal’s heart – when she fails to do so, she exposes her friend’s appeal of seducing him.
What Happens To Kunal, Diya And Ally In The End?When Ally exposes Diya’s secret, Kunal loses trust on both of them since he thinks that they consider him a tool that they can experiment upon. Although he has every right to be sad, he has also committed a grave mistake by keeping Diya in the dark about Ally’s proposal. He runs away from the wedding venue since he cannot take the pain anymore and refuses to see two women fighting over himself. Finally, after Kunal’s father teaches him to face reality, he stops running and faces Diya and Ally. In “Before We Go,” there’s a golden sentence that comes up while Nick and Brooke are having a conversation, which suggests that if someone’s committed to somebody, they should not allow themselves to search for perfection in someone else. For Kunal, Diya is not just a lover, but his home, where he feels safe and comfortable. Ally might be a perfect match (although the idea of perfection itself is laughable), they might be compatible due to similar ideas, but thinking about those “what if”s are pointless. In the end, Kunal and Diya get happily married and Ally stops pursuing him since she finally realizes where to draw the line. Apart from a few redundant comedy sequences amidst the emotionally heavy third act, “Cocktail 2” is a lesson for everyone who prefers perfection and thrill in a relationship just for comfort and stability.
