Back in 2019, the first foldable phone was a proof of concept; impressive, fragile, and not entirely ready for the world.

Eight generations later, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is something closer to a finished product — and the distance between the two is not incremental.

Early foldable phones were easy to admire and difficult to live with; that crease across the inner screen was visible from across a room.

Bodies were thick enough to feel deliberate.

Outer screens so narrow they resembled a television remote more than a smartphone, and for all its engineering, the hinge inspired more anxiety than confidence.

What has happened since is a sustained, generation-by-generation correction of every one of those problems — and with the Z Fold 8 Ultra, that correction reaches something close to completion.

That crease which defined the category for years is now detectable by touch but invisible to the eye.

Samsung’s Flex Titanium technology replaces the plastic support layer beneath the foldable panel with a titanium alloy backing plate.

A titanium alloy film, measured in tens of micrometres in thickness, sits directly beneath the display panel.

The result is a screen that distributes light evenly across its surface, leaving no visible line where the fold occurs.

The structural properties of titanium — high strength, flexibility, and elastic recovery — allow the panel to absorb tens of thousands of fold cycles without the surface degradation that made earlier generations visibly age over time.

The hinge mechanism has been revised alongside the display.

Tighter tolerances across the hinge assembly improve water and dust resistance, addressing another longstanding concern about foldable durability.

Those hinge revisions carry through to the handling experience.

The Z Fold 8 Ultra is marginally easier to hold and use than the Z Fold 7 .

The physical dimensions are nearly identical, but refined ergonomic edges and the revamped hinge system resolve the most persistent handling frustrations of the previous generation in a way that becomes apparent within the first few minutes of use.

Battery Gets Bigger Without The Bulk

The battery story is equally considered.

Fitting a larger battery into a thinner, lighter body is not a straightforward engineering problem.

The Z Fold 8 Ultra solves it through Silicon-Carbon Anode technology, which replaces conventional graphite in the battery anode with a silicon-carbon composite material.

The substitution raises energy density within the same physical cell volume.

The result is a 5,000mAh battery in a body that weighs 215 grams — consistent with the previous generation despite the capacity increase.

A dual-channel charging architecture supports 45W wired fast charging, reaching 67 per cent in 30 minutes.

For a device category that has historically asked users to accept battery compromises in exchange for the folding form factor, this represents a meaningful shift.

The Z Fold 8 Ultra also arrives in a broader range of colourways than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — a small but deliberate signal that Samsung is positioning this generation as a device with wider personal appeal, not just a technical upgrade.

Multi-Window, Flex Mode, and the Case for a Larger Canvas

The 8.0-inch inner screen is where the platform’s maturity becomes most apparent.

Earlier foldable phones offered a large inner screen as a novelty.

The Z Fold 8 Ultra offers it as a working environment.

The 8.0-inch display supports simultaneous three-panel multi-window operation, with individually adjustable window sizes and the ability to pull any panel into a floating picture-in-picture overlay at any point.

It supports both vertical and horizontal split-screen arrangements.

The Flex Mode Panel converts the lower half of the inner screen into a trackpad when the device is held at an angle, enabling cursor-style input for document work and detailed tasks.

At this screen size, these features stop being demonstrations and start being useful.

Content that would require scrolling on a standard smartphone fits fully on the screen.

Two applications running side by side have enough room to be legible; a third application in a floating window does not obscure the other two.

Bigger Screen, Smarter Assistant, Tighter Controls

The AI integration reflects where the platform has arrived; the Z Fold 8 Ultra supports Google Gemini and Perplexity as AI assistants.

Voice queries return results on the inner screen at a display scale comparable to a tablet browser window — a meaningful difference from reading the same response on a 6.1-inch display.

Galaxy AI features including Now Brief and Now Nudge surface contextual information and suggested next actions across the larger inner display, showing more simultaneous content than a standard smartphone screen allows.

The additional screen area is not decorative. It changes how AI-generated information is consumed.

Security has kept pace with the expanded AI surface area, with Samsung Knox providing the underlying device security framework.

A new AI Assistant Activity list consolidates visibility into all automated tasks executed by AI assistants on the user’s behalf—a single view that replaces the need to check individual applications separately.

Enhanced Privacy Alerts issue proactive notifications when potential privacy risks are detected before they materialise.

Data access permissions across applications remain manageable from a centralised interface.

As AI assistants take on more autonomous tasks across a device, the ability to see and control what they are doing becomes more relevant.

The Z Fold 8 Ultra treats that visibility as a feature, not an afterthought.

The Wait Was Worth It

Eight generations is a long time to refine a single idea.

The foldable phone began as a category defined by its compromises.

Buyers accepted the crease, the weight, the narrow outer screen, and the hinge anxiety because the large inner display offered something a standard smartphone could not.

None of those concessions applies here; that crease is gone from view, and at 215 grams, the body is light enough to forget about.

Wide enough to use without frustration, the outer screen no longer demands patience.

Close the hinge, and it inspires confidence rather than caution, and the battery life lasts.

And for the first time, the AI features have a screen large enough to make them genuinely worth using.

What the foldable phone was always supposed to feel like — a large screen that folds into a pocket, without the sense that something was sacrificed to get it there — is what the Z Fold 8 Ultra actually delivers.

That took eight generations.

The result is genuinely impressive.
