MIRI, Aug 21: A 31-year-old woman has been reported missing after becoming separated from her friends while hiking at Lambir Hills National Park here today.
In a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a call was received at 7.24pm, and firefighters from the Miri station were deployed.
It was noted that at 9am, the victim, Veronique Joseph, and five other friends went hiking at the Lambir Hills National Park.
By 12pm, it was estimated that all six hikers reached the summit, and by 1pm they began their descent.
However, the victim was ahead of the group and was moving quickly until she was believed to have become separated from her friends at 2pm.
Her friends reached the starting checkpoint at 5pm, but the victim was not found. After attempting to search for and call her without success, they informed the Lambir Hills National Park ranger team, who then contacted Bomba for assistance.
“The operations team arrived at the location at 8.35pm and obtained information about the incident from the rangers and the victim’s friends.
“The operation commander reported that search and rescue (SAR) operations could not be conducted as it was already dark and the victim’s exact location was unknown,” said the report. — DayakDaily
