Earbuds sit in daily use from the morning commute to late-night calls, for work, study, entertainment, everything in between. Most people wear them specifically to avoid disturbing others with loud audio. Fewer people, it turns out, ever clean them.

Some People Have Never Cleaned Theirs At All

It’s not always laziness. A lot of people simply don’t know the right way to remove earwax, oil and general grime without risking damage to the earbuds themselves. Get it wrong, and you could end up with a broken pair instead of a clean one.

Clean Weekly If You Use Them Daily

Frequent daily use builds up earwax, dust and general debris over time, degrading sound quality and creating a genuine hygiene issue. According to BGR, users who wear earbuds nearly every day should give them a light wipe weekly, with a deeper clean about once a month to properly clear wax, sweat and bacteria. If weekly feels like too much to keep up with, cleaning at least monthly still meaningfully reduces buildup. This matters beyond sound quality too, unclean earbuds sitting inside a sealed ear canal create a warm, moist environment bacteria thrive in, raising the real risk of ear infections, especially if the earbuds are ever shared with someone else.

What You’ll Need

• A soft-bristled brush or an old, unused toothbrush, for loosening dust and debris• 70% isopropyl alcohol, diluted with water rather than used at full strength, for disinfecting surfaces• Cotton swabs, for tighter, harder-to-reach spots• A microfiber cloth, for wiping down exteriors• Mild soap and water, for washing removable silicone tips separately

Cleaning The Earbuds Themselves

Power the earbuds off and disconnect them from any paired device first.

Use the soft brush or toothbrush to gently sweep away surface dust and debris, brushing outward from the speaker mesh rather than pressing inward, which risks pushing wax deeper into the grille instead of removing it.

If the ear tips are removable, take them off and wash them separately with mild soap and water. Let them air dry completely before reattaching, never put damp tips back on, moisture trapped against the speaker nozzle can cause damage.

Lightly dampen a cotton swab with diluted isopropyl alcohol, not full-strength, and gently clean the exterior surfaces. Keep alcohol away from the speaker mesh and any fabric components specifically, undiluted alcohol can degrade these parts over time.

Wipe the whole exterior down with a dry microfiber cloth.Check for any remaining moisture or residue before use. If anything’s still damp, let it air dry fully first, never reinsert or charge earbuds that aren’t completely dry.

Cleaning The Charging Case

A clean pair of earbuds sitting in a dirty case defeats the purpose, bacteria transfers straight back. Keep the case clean too.

Make sure the case is empty and not currently charging.

Brush away loose dust and debris from the case’s surfaces using the same soft brush or toothbrush.

Wipe every surface down with a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with diluted isopropyl alcohol.

Use a dry cotton swab to clean the charging pins inside the case specifically, moisture on charging contacts can cause connectivity issues down the line.

Leave the case open until it’s fully dry before placing the earbuds back inside.

A little regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping earbuds working properly and lasting longer. Keeping them clean isn’t just about how they look, it’s part of taking care of a device you’re putting directly in your ears daily.
