Perfection is not something that’s ever been there in nature but some people still think that it should be the new normal. Directed by Sreeti Mukerji, produced by Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt, Amazon Prime Video’s “Don’t Be Shy” tells the tale of Shyamili aka Shy, who is chasing perfection in life. She wants to join her boyfriend Mayank’s company, marry him, take charge of the company – she is ready to adopt any of these plans, which she has painted on her walls. Actually, Shy does not want to settle for less and she thinks that her parents are unable to provide her with a rich lifestyle just because of their poor decisions. She does not want to compromise in life and wherever she goes, she fakes being rich. Shy tells everyone that her parents live in London and they have a rich textile business when all they have is a vintage clothing shop. Although Shy’s friends believe in her lies, her neighbor Dhruv knows everything about her.

Why Does Mayank Break Up With Shy?Mayank wants to have a life of his own, that defines him beyond the label of a Jhunjhunwallah. He wants to be a singer and for that, he is ready to put in a great amount of effort. Although Mayank is really enthusiastic, his parents do not support his vision at all. When Mayank expects to receive support from Shy, she shocks him by insulting his choice right in front of the entire household, which wounds his ego. He realizes that Shy is probably with him just because of his riches and a chance to be a part of the Jhunjhunwallah internship. Mayank figures out that Shy wants to run the company together and that’s one of the major reasons why she wants him to follow his father’s path and become a businessman. This makes Mayank push Shy away and break up with her on his birthday night. Shy does not know it yet but Mayank is aware of her lies about her family background – it turns out that he has cheated on her with a girl called Tara, but Shy does not know it yet.
What Changes Shy’s Feelings For Tara?Hate is a strong word but that’s the only thing that properly defines the nature of Shy’s feelings towards Tara. When Shy finds out that Tara is actually Mayank’s new girlfriend, she cannot help but despise her whole existence. Shy starts to find new ways to harass Tara and prove her to be a fool in front of her friends as some sort of revenge plan. To make college life a hell for Tara, Shy teams up with her friends, Aashna and Tinaz, to heckle Mayank’s new girlfriend even more. Shy’s plan almost becomes a success when she pushes Tara towards failure by hiding her clothes for the fashion show contest. After Tara still manages to succeed, Shy decides to wear her clothes and make an impression on stage but this is where it goes wrong. Due to different fits, Shy experiences a faux pas on stage and while the entire arena embarrasses her, it is Tara who steps forward. She is the one who stops Mayank from slut-shaming Shy and stops others from doing the same. When Shy gets comforted by Tara, it changes her entire outlook towards her.
Why Does Dhruv Lash Out At Shy?Shy only talks with Dhruv just to get to Mayank’s head; she wants to make her ex-boyfriend jealous but does not realize the severe downside of it. Dhruv has loved Shy ever since he was a kid and that feeling has never changed – this explains why he always keeps checking on her, no matter how much she dislikes it. Even when Shy gets humiliated and excluded at the party, it is Dhruv who accompanies her throughout. Although Shy almost kisses Dhruv after they spend a night together inside the locked store, she seems to forget everything right after and does not resist when Mayank kisses her. Later, when her misdeeds destroy Dhruv’s chances of ever being useful (will be addressed later), it completely destroys Dhruv’s self-esteem. His anger towards Shy comes from the realization that Shy always used him as a tool, for her own sake – she never really thought about the impact. Dhruv is angry because he knows that Shy never thought about the long term effects of faking a relationship with him. This is the reason why Dhruv stops talking with Shy completely.
Why Can’t Shy Stay With Nandini?Shy’s plan for greatness is actually modeled after Nandini’s book on achieving perfection in life. Although it is a massive shock after Shy discovers that Tara’s mother is none other than the famous writer, Nandini, she ignores it completely. As time goes by, Shy enjoys talking with Nandini but very soon, she realizes why it’s often said that it is better if we never meet our heroes. It turns out that Nandini is a perfectionist and a manipulative mother who does not want to let Tara make her own decisions. Nandini does not want Tara to have any sort of carbohydrates because she wants her to have a perfectly toned figure. Shy lies through her teeth and Tara runs away with Shy because she cannot watch the latter get humiliated anymore. This time, Shy slowly realizes that the idea of perfection is dangerous and should not be applicable to our real lives – Tara does not live her life, she just exists as a pawn of Nandini.
What Does Shy’s Desperations Cost? After Mayank openly admits that he cheated on Shy just to get back at her for her lies, it turns her whole world upside down. Shy thinks that Tara was also a part of Mayank’s plan. To teach both of them a lesson, Shy manages to get some drugs and mixes them into Mayank’s tumbler, to make him intoxicated before his stage performance. However, the next morning, massive chaos unfolds after Tara uses Mayank’s tumbler to mix cocktails and intoxicates everyone at the fest. By the time Mr. Q and Shy intervene, everyone seems to have gone crazy and unleashed a ruckus. As a result, the committee had to cancel the competitions, which canceled Mayank’s chance to shine. However, Shy’s desperation to take revenge on Mayank also destroys Dhruv’s meticulous efforts at cooking. Later, things grow more intense as Mr. Q loses his job and the whole college ridicules Tara, since it was her who poured the cocktail out of Mayank’s tumbler.
What Happens To Shy And Dhruv In The End?Shy gets suspended after she confesses her fault at college and while she spends time at home, she figures out the best way to deal with her problems. Although she never thought about it, Shy realizes that there is no plan for greatness – she can only fix herself and do better in life, instead of expecting better things on her way. This is the thought that motivates her to renovate her family’s shop and restart the business with a new look. Shy becomes apologetic because she understands that instead of chasing perfection, she needs to work on her own imperfections. She rushes to the “Rebels” audition and seeks forgiveness on national television from everyone, especially Mr. Q and Tara. Shy also pauses the audition for Tara, who finally is freed from Nandini’s clutches and forgives her classmate for her misdeeds. Later, Shy, who never ever said sorry to someone, apologises to Dhruv while giving him a sunflower as a warm gesture. She finally confesses her love for the one man who never really gave up on her and always saw her true worth. In the end, the fairy-tale ending that Shy gets, in terms of booming business or a successful love story with Dhruv, it’s all because of her own efforts. This version of Shy does not want to be with rich men like Mayank to seek validation or secure her future (which explains why the graffiti on her wall regarding her ‘plan’ completely transforms), because she is self-sufficient.
