Spoilers Ahead
Why Did Charlie Seek Out Colter? The episode opens in Wooledge household in San Pedro, Sean, construction worker by profession and the sole guardian of his sons, Charlie and Hank, have shouldered the responsibility of raising them on his own since the tragic passing of his wife two years ago. At present, Sean appears to be distracted, as he has burnt their dinner, and upon getting some texts on his phone, decides to leave all of a sudden to attend a ‘work thing’. In his absence, Charlie has to take care of his younger brother, and he tries to keep Hank calm, despite himself getting nervous when Sean doesn’t return even at late night. Sean remains unreachable on his phone, and on calling the construction site he works at, Charlie learns he isn’t there either.
The scene shifts to Colter Shaw’s airstream trailer, while getting into his morning routine, Colter flips through his notebook where he writes down all his case details. One of the unresolved cases, involving a woman and an unidentified car where she was last seen entering, arrests Colter’s attention. As he sets out for the morning run, Randy calls him to inform that he has been assigned to Sean’s disappearance case. Upon visiting Wooledge household, Colter learns Charlie learned about him from Reddit and reached out to him by pretending to be Sean’s brother during his phone calls with Randy. Charlie doesn’t want cops to get involved as he fears CPS is going to separate him and Hank, like they have attempted to do once previously. The poor kid fears for his father’s safety, and promises to pay Colter anyway he can. Colter, who lost his own father, Ashton, when he was the same age as Charlie’s, can relate to his desperation and promises to help him.
What Happened to Sean and Stephany?Learning from Charlie that Sean communicated with someone before inexplicably leaving the previous night, Colter asks Randy to check up on his last contact and learns of an ex-con named Bern Maddox. Colter tracks Maddox down in a welding workshop, and learns Sean got a gun from him the previous night, which he apparently needed to protect his lover. While leaving the workshop, Colter notices Charlie has been secretly following him, which is causing trouble as he needs to visit places and hear stuff which kids of Charlie’s age should not be aware of. Colter promises Charlie that he will do the best he can and decides to drop the kid to the school. Colter asks Charlie about the identity of Sean’s lover, and learns he is in a relationship with a certain Stephanie Rodriguez, a hotshot supervisor at port.
Upon visiting Stephanie’s house, Colter identifies the signs of breaking and entering, which indicates a violent situation has recently unfolded there. As he cautiously enters the house, he finds a corpse inside the bathroom, and informs local authorities about the situation. Detective Kao, who is surprised to learn about Colter’s profession, learns details about Stephanie and Sean from him. As the corpse is identified to be of a certain Brent Russo’s, who was Stephany’s ex-boyfriend, Kao theorizes that following a love triangle led violent situation, Sean killed Brent and escaped with Stephany. However, Colter’s deduction skills lead him to believe that there was a fourth party involved, who killed Brent and abducted Sean and Stephany from the scene. Colter confirms his suspicion after taking a look into the surveillance footage of a nearby shop, and finds out Sean and Stephany were indeed abducted by a group of enforcers who took them away in a van. Colter asks his ever reliable handler/ legal associate, defence attorney Reenie to look whether Brent was involved in any sort of investigations about which local police are unaware of. In the meantime, with Randy’s help, Colter identifies the plates of the van, which belong to a freight hauling company in the ports, and heads to its HQ. Reenie is able to pry the intel that Brent has ties with the Russian mob, led by a certain Archer Litvak, who wants to use Stephany’s port clearance for his human trafficking activities. Brent, who worked at the ports as well, had been pressuring Stephany for the clearance, who continued to refuse his offers. Upon learning Stephany is in trouble, Sean obtains the gun anticipating danger. Archer and his crew killed Brent, and abducted Sean and Stephany.
Was Colter Able to Save Sean and Stephany?Colter expertly infiltrates the hauling company HQ and manages to rescue Sean by knocking down several mob enforcers. However, he learns that Stephany has been taken away by Archer, who wants to bring one of his freight containers by forcing her to provide clearance. Reenie calls Colter to reveal Archer and his crew’s true motive, and this prompts Colter to become more cautious as in fear of exposure, Archer might kill all the people who are held captive inside the freight containers. Tracking down Archer’s probable location in the shipyard, Colter engages in a little Batman routine to tactically knock down all the enforcers present in the vicinity. Eventually, he corners and shoots Archer, saving Stephany and all the captives who were being smuggled by a Russian mob. Sean’s case allowed Colter to help all those who had lost any hope of freedom after getting lured by mob on false promises of better life. Now they will be able to reunite with their families, all thanks to Colter’s unreal efficiency as a tracker.
Detective Kao arrives at the scene with cavalry and thanks Colter for literally becoming a one man army to take down the crime gang and rescue their victims. Colter brings Sean back to his sons, and Sean decides to introduce Stephany to his family to celebrate the reunion. Charlie thanks Colter, who already sees a bit of himself in the kid, and as a good samaritan, Colter refuses taking any form of payment from him. Bidding goodbye to Charlie, Colter calls Randy for his next assignment. This case has provided quite a boost to his morale and without taking some time off, he is already prepared to help whoever is in need.
