U Mobile to rollout 5G for JB-Singapore RTS Link Station

Commuters travelling between Johor Bahru and Singapore on the upcoming RTS Link can look forward to reliable mobile internet throughout the terminal. U Mobile and MRT Corp have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore deploying 4G and 5G in-building coverage (IBC) at the Bukit Chagar Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex (ICQC) in Johor Bahru. This collaboration will help to ensure that this important cross-border transport gateway is ready to provide reliable mobile connectivity when the RTS Link commences operation, supporting a more connected and convenient travel experience between Malaysia and Singapore.

Indoor 5G to support cross-border commuters and station operations

Around 40,000 people are expected to cross the border on the RTS Link every single day once it opens. Under the proposed plan, indoor cellular infrastructure would provide mobile reception for cross-border commuters during clearance procedures, as well as support communication requirements for roughly 600 government personnel stationed within the complex. According to the parties, the high-speed connectivity framework is also intended to accommodate future building automation and AI application to support station management. The deployment remains subject to technical evaluation, regulatory approvals and the execution of a definitive agreement.Beyond enhancing mobile connectivity, 5G IBC can also provide the foundation for future 5G and AI-powered digital use cases within the complex, supporting smarter building operations greater operational and an enhanced passenger experience.

U Mobile ULTRA5G has exceeded 90% 5G population coverage

Earlier this month, U Mobile announced that its ULTRA5G network reached 90% population coverage nationwide, hitting its rollout target more than nine months ahead of schedule. The orange telco’s 5G indoor coverage currently covers over 250 sites and the upcoming Bukit Chagar station would add to their growing list of in-building coverage areas.
