An Injured Opossum Survived Against All Odds, And Now He’s Teaching People To Love His Species
1 hour ago
Few animal stories are as heartwarming as rescue stories, reminding us of the power of a second chance. At Hoosier Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation in Noblesville, Indiana, USA, a special Virginia Opossum named Cooper is living a life filled with comfort and purpose after an almost fatal fall. Scroll down to learn his full story and how he somehow became a beloved community figure.
Rescued against all odds, Virginia Opossum ‘Cooper’ now teaches about his speciesIn September 2025, Cooper was admitted after falling into a window well during an Indiana heatwave while the homeowner was away. Weighing a frail, emaciated 2.5 pounds, dehydrated, and suffering from a severe head injury and sores, his condition was critical.
Over last winter, the team dedicated time, patience, and specialized care to help him recover. Through fluid therapy, careful refeeding, antibiotics, and veterinary care, Cooper made a remarkable physical recovery and eventually weighed a healthy 10.3 pounds! However, the incident left him with lasting brain damage. Unafraid of people and without a normal awareness of predators, the rescue center knew he couldn’t be returned to the wild. That’s when he found a new calling: touching hearts and inspiring compassion for animals like him.
When returning to the wild became impossible, a new mission began for Cooper as the cutest education ambassadorAs Rebecca Orr, Director of Hoosier Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, told Bored Panda, that’s one of the hardest parts of wildlife rehabilitation: working so hard toward release, only to realize an animal cannot safely go home. Thankfully, Cooper had another option. He spent the last year as an official education ambassador, helping people learn about an animal that is often misunderstood and rarely appreciated.
With a custom routine of cozy naps and nest-making, Cooper is thriving in his new life as an ambassadorWhile his wild counterparts typically live only about two years, every single milestone feels extra special. As Rebecca shared with us, “We’ve already had Cooper for about a year, and knowing how little time opossums get makes me appreciate every bit of it.” Cooper now enjoys a luxurious daily routine tailored to his needs.
In summer, he sleeps through the day and emerges around 8 p.m. to “scavenge” for food, enjoying simplified enrichment activities suited to his unique abilities. In the winter, he wakes around noon to groom like a cat, takes cozy naps, and spends his evenings from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. working on intricate nest-building projects or walking on his extra-large exercise wheel.
Operating entirely on public support, Hoosier Wildlife Rescue works relentlessly to save and protect Indiana’s native animalsAs an Indiana-based nonprofit, Hoosier Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation saves injured and orphaned native wildlife through three main pillars: rehabilitation, education, and conservation. Operating in an increasingly urbanized region where humans and wildlife share space, the rescue cares for thousands of animals annually at no cost to the public, relying solely on public donations, grants, a small staff, and a dedicated network of volunteers.
Alongside bats, owls, and raccoons, Cooper reminds us of the power of compassion and living in harmony with natureToday, Cooper stands as the sweetest ambassador alongside many other animals currently receiving care, including opossums, raccoons, turtles, toads, an owl, a Double-crested Cormorant, and Indiana bats. Because most animals enter care due to human activity, Cooper’s journey powerfully reminds us why coexisting with nature is so vital.
He may never return to the wild, but in his permanent safe haven, he continues to spark compassion and help protect his species, a mission you can support through your donations.
