KUCHING, Oct 30: Preparations for the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games are progressing well, with all venue upgrading works targeted for completion by June next year, allowing three months for trial runs before the competition begins.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said most facilities were ahead of schedule, with only one or two requiring closer attention.

He said the June deadline was deliberately set to give organisers three months to test the venues and address any technical issues before the actual competition.

“We do not want the works to be completed in August and the venues immediately put to use in September, only for us to encounter problems with the wiring, lighting or other technical aspects,” he said speaking to reporters after the Sarawak Esports Expo (SAREX) 2026 press conference at Petra Jaya today.

Abdul Karim, who is also Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, said some facilities were expected to be completed as early as January next year, while the remaining works would continue towards the June deadline.

Among the major venues, Sarawak Stadium is slightly ahead of schedule, with its upgrading works expected to be completed by January 2027.

He said he was confident the facilities would be ready on time, as the contractors had been briefed on the importance of meeting the stipulated deadlines.

“Any delay would tarnish the image of the state, the ministry and Malaysia.

“If the facilities are not completed by the stipulated deadlines, the contractors will have to work day and night. We will know what action needs to be taken,” he said.

On esports, Abdul Karim said the Imperial Hotel Kuching had been identified as the venue for the competition.

He described the venue as suitable, citing its ample space and proximity to accommodation and shopping facilities. — DayakDaily
