KUCHING, Nov 20: A sum of RM2.97 million has been allocated across all 12 divisions to improve and upgrade active temporary evacuation centres in Sarawak in preparation for the Northeast Monsoon, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall starting November onwards, with the heaviest anticipated in January 2025.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas stated that with support from Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak and other technical agencies, the upgrading works are set to be implemented and completed by early 2025.
“This initiative will enhance the centres’ readiness and functionality for future emergency situations,” he said during his ministerial winding-up speech in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.
Currently, Sarawak has 661 temporary evacuation centres capable of accommodating up to 160,819 disaster victims.
Uggah revealed that a total of 5,727 personnel is on standby, supported by 564 ground assets, 1,269 marine and river assets, 25 air assets and 154 supporting assets.
“The Divisional and Districts Disaster Management Committees and monitoring agencies will remain on full alert to respond to any emergencies,” he said.
Additionally, Sarawak Social Welfare Department has stocked up on disaster relief supplies in all storage depots, office warehouses, and frontline bases.
A total of 31 forward bases have been established throughout Sarawak to facilitate the timely distribution of food aid during disasters, especially as part of the preparation for the monsoon season. — DayakDaily
