MBKS vows firm action including impound, legal measures against illegal hawkers at Tabuan Tranquility

KUCHING, Dec 21: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will not hesitate to take decisive action, including impounding property and pursuing legal measures, to address illegal hawking activities in the Tabuan Tranquility commercial area.

Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng made this clear during his ShallWeeTalk live session today, in response to a netizen’s query alleging MBKS’ inaction despite multiple reports about illegal hawkers, including a burger stall operating in front of a pharmacy.

Wee explained that MBKS enforcement officers have issued warnings and compounds to the violators, but the offenders repeatedly resumed their activities.

“We have not refused to act. Our officers have issued warning notices and compounds, but they keep coming back.

“If they continue to ignore regulations, we will escalate our actions by collecting evidence, issuing further compounds, impounding their possessions, and taking them to court,” he said.

Wee acknowledged that such strict measures might attract criticism, especially from certain politicians.

“When the Council takes drastic actions like removing properties, there will inevitably be judgments and criticism. That’s why I need the public to back us up. If residents want firm action, we will do our part—but only after fulfilling all necessary requirements,” he emphasiaed.

He assured residents that while MBKS would act decisively, the process takes time due to the need to follow proper procedures.

“Rest assured, we will not hesitate to take action when needed,” he said.

Wee also referred to a previous case where MBKS collaborated with the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Environment Board, and other agencies to successfully prosecute a violator, leading to the impoundment of property and subsequent court action. — DayakDaily
