The United States has unveiled sweeping new regulations to control the export of artificial intelligence (AI) chips and related technologies, dividing the globe into three tiers. These restrictions are designed to safeguard US leadership in AI and limit China’s access to advanced computing capabilities.

Under these rules, countries are classified into three categories:

• Tier 1 countries such as Japan, the UK, South Korea, and the Netherlands, which enjoy unrestricted access to US AI technology.

• Tier 2 nations such as Malaysia, Singapore, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, which face restrictions on the number of AI chips they can import.

• Tier 3 nations including China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, which are barred entirely from receiving US-made AI chips and related technologies.

Malaysia’s Position in the Tiers

Malaysia has been classified as a Tier 2 country. This means that it will face caps on the number of AI chips that can be imported, though it is not as restricted as Tier 3 countries. While Malaysia’s specific restrictions remain under review, the move signals the nation will need to navigate the complexities of these regulations.

According to industry analysts, Malaysia’s AI sector, which has shown significant growth in recent years, might face some challenges as a result of these export controls. However, the country’s growing digital infrastructure could help mitigate some of the impacts.
