Psst, if you haven’t heard, Paolo Paolo Gelato and Feeling+ have also opened in new locations recently, so visit their social media pages for more information!

1. ESCA

Popping up on the ever-busy Jalan Petaling, Esca aims to bring flavours, ingredients, and dishes from around the world under its own roof for a dining experience you won’t forget. Its taglines “enjoy irresponsibly” and “colourful with a touch of crazy” say it all. Plates here are playful and eye-opening, yet comforting. As the sister restaurant of Taman Tun Dr Ismail’s Terra Dining with Chef YC at the helm, you can bet on your bites here being technically sound, while still leaning on the more exciting side of things. Our favourites include its barramundi crudo with sour mango, pumpkin salad with calamansi dressing, prawn toast with ebiko mayo and pickled cornichons, as well as grilled octopus legs with sambal matan. Don’t forget to append a cocktail or two to your order to make the most out of your time here!

Address: 135G, Jalan Petaling, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur

Opening hours: 5pm to 11pm (Tuesday to Sunday)

2. HUMBOLDT

Follow the current to Bukit Damansara’s latest bar, Humboldt. Brought to life by the minds behind award-winning Junglebird, this new watering hole takes inspiration from the Humboldt Current, even positioning the Humbolt penguin and the jumbo Humboldt squid as its protagonists. On the cocktail menu are tasteful and well-balanced tipples, developed by Joshua Ivanovic. We love its Pisco Sour that champions a Waqar pisco and house-made mistela. Lolita Goh is at the forefront of the food programme, which features thoroughly-researched and bold plates such as beef heart skewers, barramundi coconut stew, and deep-fried rabbit.

Address: 73-1, Jalan Setia Bakti, Bukit Damansara, 50490 Kuala Lumpur

Opening hours: 5pm to 1am (Sunday to Wednesday) | 5pm to 2am (Friday and Saturday) | closed on Monday and Tuesday

3. MICHIN GRILL

Gather your favourite Korean barbecue companions and get a table at Michin Grill, one of two new grill-focused restaurants to check out in KL this February 2025. Located at the The Five, this new hangout specialises in all things juicy and grilled. On the menu, you’ll spot luxurious cuts of pork that you can enjoy alongside its cold noodles, rice balls, and kimchi jjigae. You can also add some non-pork specialties like ox tongue to your tables for a fuller meal. Whether you lean towards the marinated or non-marinated side of things, you’ll find something for yourself (and everyone else at the table) on the menu.

4. JUBAN

Still on the hunt for some grilled goodness? Take a drive to SS15, where you’ll find Juban. This Malaysian location happens to be the first-ever foreign outpost of the Kobe-born brand, making it a must-visit destination for Japanese yakiniku lovers all over the Klang Valley. From the distinct char on the meat to the brand’s mouthwatering secret sauce, each karubi bowl is sure to hit the spot, served alongside some kimchi and soup. If you’re not in the mood for beef short ribs, opt for its chicken or pork bowls, which will also do the trick.

Focused on serving quick yet hearty Thai staples, the restaurant is your next go-to for reliable and vibrant bowls. Taking the spotlight is its halal khao soi, which has garnered a cult following at big sister restaurant Gai just upstairs. You also can’t miss its Kway Teow Nam Sai with a mix of either premium seafood or fishballs and fishcakes as well as its supreme crab balls.

6. REN REN NOODLES

We continue on the noodle train and get off at Section 17, where Ren Ren Noodles is located. It’s no secret what this new eatery specialises in and its menu proves it, riddled with ramen-style noodles that are tossed in silky, glossy sauces and topped with your choice of protein. Choose from a spicy braised beef, sweet gula Melaka minced pork, juicy prawn wontons, and so much more. A thick dollop of chilli paste will give you the kick you need, while a bowl of soup on the side will help extinguish the heat.

With a backdrop of beautifully preserved stained glass windows and tastefully aged walls, this cosy hangout is the place to be for heartwarming Peranakan cuisine. Currently, it is only serving up soulful bowls of laksa, cakes, and drinks — which are all more than enough to complete a relaxing kickback from the roar of the city.

BONUS: SOOD BY CHEF TON, PENANG

If you’re ever up north in George Town and on the market for a solid Thai meal, book yourself a seat at Sood by Chef Ton. With that alone, you’re pretty much guaranteed a meal that will hit all the right spots from ingredients to technique to presentation. The menu is teeming with dishes that will give you an honest taste of Thailand’s best, all while being presented in creative yet approachable ways. Think botan ebi marinated in fish sauce, grilled squid with passionfruit sauce, crab fried rice, galangal soup fish with grilled mushrooms, and papaya salad with salted egg yolk.
