‘May there be a miracle for my son’ – Father of boy who choked on gummy candy

"PLEASE pray for the well-being of my eldest child, he is in critical condition. May there be a miracle for him."

This was the plea from Mohamad Fakhruddin Mohamad Fikri, 35, the father of Mohamad Fahmi, 10, who has been in critical condition since yesterday, after allegedly choking on a gummy eye candy.

According to reports in Berita Harian, Mohamad Fakhruddin said the last time he and his wife saw their child was at 8:30 am today in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the Penang Hospital.

He said the doctor informed him that Muhamad Fahmi is still not showing any signs of improvement and they are doing their best for him.

"If there is no progress, they will stop administering the medication and evaluate what to do next.

"My heart is shattered ... a cheerful child suddenly in such a state. At this time, our family can only pray and surrender him to the power of Allah.

"The tragedy that befell our eldest child is very shocking, we had no power to prevent it," he said when met by BH at the grounds of the hospital today.

I heard my son call me ‘baba’

He was with his wife, Noraini Mohamad Isa, 37, and sister, Siti Farhanim Mohamad Fikri, 33.

Mohamad Fakhruddin said that since his son was transferred to the PICU HPP from Seberang Jaya Hospital, he has not returned home and not left the waiting area, hoping for good news from the doctor.

He said he tried to rest for a while but woke up as if he heard Muhamad Fahmi calling him.

"I clearly heard Muhamad Fahmi call me 'baba', but then I realised it was just a dream or my imagination.

"Yesterday, Muhamad Fahmi said he didn't want to go to the Quran and Fardhu 'Ain (KAFA) class because he was tired.

"I thought it was just a normal thing since the new school session had just started,".

His gaze is what I remember

"Before entering the classroom, he turned to look at me, and his gaze is what I still remember to this day.

"I don't want it to be the last memory ... Muhamad Fahmi needs to be strong because many people are waiting for him.

The couple plans to bring their second child, Nufa Fakhira, 4, to visit Fahmi, so he can feel the presence of his younger sibling.

According to Muhamad Fakhruddin, he does not blame anyone for the tragedy that befell his child.

Stop blaming my son

However, he said he was a bit upset when some individuals blamed his child for buying the candy.

"We have already suffered enough dealing with this, and I've had enough of negative comments, with some even blaming my son.

"Fahmi didn't know anything; he didn't know this would happen," he said.

It was reported yesterday that Fahmi was fighting for his life after it was believed he had choked on a gummy candy he bought outside his school on Tuesday.

He remains in a critical, unconscious state. – February 20, 2025
