A decade of World #QuranHour: From Malaysia to the world

GOMBAK – Warisan Ummah Ikhlas Foundation (WUIF) celebrates 10 years of World #QuranHour, a movement that started in Malaysia and has now inspired audiences across the globe.

This year’s event will take place at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in Gombak on March 25 (24 Ramadan 1446H).

WUIF chief executive officer Marhaini Yusoff said World #QuranHour, which started at IIUM, has now made an extraordinary impact with widespread participation from both within and outside the country.

"From Malaysia, the campaign to engage with the Quran through reading, understanding and practicing has expanded worldwide. When we first started, we received support from IIUM and the Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS).

"IIUM alumni abroad have also played a significant role in spreading this initiative. Now, we are witnessing a significant increase with a reach of 7.72 billion on social media and 313 registered locations in 76 countries worldwide," she said.

Marhaini said the World #QuranHour is more than just an annual event, it has ignited a cultural shift in society, encouraging the reading, understanding and practice of the Quran.

She added that various organisations have now organised their own #QuranHour programmes at their respective locations, such as the Public Works Department, Inland Revenue Board, Malaysian Industrial Research and Technology Development Organisation (Sirim) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas).

This shows that the culture of engaging with the Quran is becoming more accepted and expanding.

"This year, World #QuranHour carries a major mission guided by Surah Al-Saff with the theme #SavingTheUmmah. The five main pillars in this surah are hoped to serve as guidance in building individual and communal quality among Muslims.

"To ensure the success of this year’s World #QuranHour, various parties have expressed their support, including Astro Oasis, which has been confirmed as the official broadcaster.

"A media briefing will be held soon to further detail the involvement of the media in expanding the impact of this programme.

"More than 5,000 Quran Corner locations that have received donated copies of the Quran since 2020 also play a role in spreading the message of the Quran to various government agencies, private sectors and educational institutions," she said.

Marhaini also urged all Malaysians to join in making 2025 World #QuranHour a success by attending the main event the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Mosque and registering as organisers of World #QuranHour at their respective locations.

"With an estimated attendance of 5,000 participants at the main venue and thousands more worldwide, this year’s World #QuranHour is expected to create a larger transformative wave in strengthening the understanding and appreciation of the Quran in daily life.

"With the participation of national leaders, uniformed bodies such as the military and police, as well as the general public, we aim to showcase a well-organised and united front, as emphasised in Surah Al-Saff.

"May this unity bring great success to the Muslim community," she said.
