Game, Set, Match: Pickleball mania going strong in Malaysia

REMEMBER when everyone was obsessed with Zumba, CrossFit and Foosball? Well, there's a new sport in town, and it's taking Malaysia by storm.

Pickleball, a dynamic blend of badminton, tennis, and ping pong, has exploded in popularity since its introduction to Malaysia in 2019.

These days, a quick look through social media can reveal multiple posts from new fans of the game. People of all ages, from kids to grandparents are having a blast on the court.

Pickleball is even being proposed as an official medal sport in the 2026 Sukma Games.

But what exactly makes this sport so appealing? Let's find out.

WHAT IS PICKLEBALL?

Imagine a mix of badminton, ping pong, and tennis, but easier on the knees.

Pickleball's charm lies in its simplicity and accessibility. Played on a court slightly smaller than a tennis court, players use paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over a net.

The rules are easy to grasp: serve underhand, let the ball bounce once on each side, and keep the rally going.

This ease of play makes it perfect for players of all ages and skill levels, from energetic kids to active seniors.

THE RISE OF PICKLEBALL

The pickleball craze first ignited in Miri, Sarawak, and quickly spread throughout the nation. Today, aside from Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor are hotbeds for the game, boasting thriving communities of players and enthusiasts.

The Malaysia Pickleball Association (MPA) has also played a crucial role in promoting and organising pickleball activities nationwide.

By July 16, 2024, a total of 33 associations and clubs were officially registered with the Sports Commission of Malaysia, reflecting the sport's surging popularity.

MORE THAN JUST A WORKOUT

Pickleball is also surprisingly budget-friendly. Paddles and balls are inexpensive, and many recreational centers offer affordable rentals. This makes it a sport that anyone can pick up and enjoy.

However, pickleball offers more than just a workout; it's a fantastic social connector. Whether you're playing with friends, bonding with family, or meeting new people at local courts, the game fosters camaraderie and connection.

SELANGOR PLANS TO BRING PICKLEBALL TO SUKMA 2026

The sport's growing popularity has fueled ambitions for greater recognition. In November 2023, Selangor chief minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, announced the state's intention to include pickleball as a medal sport in the 2026 Sukma Games, which Selangor will host.

However, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has clarified that the inclusion of pickleball is still under review.

"A sport must have participation from at least six states to be included in the Sukma Games," Yeoh stated.

"For any sport to be included, an appeal or application needs to be submitted to the games committee for review and voting."

While the final decision rests with the Sukma committee, this is still a significant step forward for the sport in Malaysia.

JOIN THE PICKLEBALL MOVEMENT

With a growing fanbase, buzzing courts, and an ever-expanding competitive scene, pickleball has firmly established itself as Malaysia's latest sporting sensation.

Whether you're a seasoned competitor or a curious beginner, now is the perfect time to grab a paddle and experience the thrill for yourself.

Here are some of the best places to play Pickleball in the Klang Valley:
