Bukit Assek rep proposes third LPG bottling plant in Tanjung Manis

KUCHING (May 21): Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Eik has proposed the establishment of a third liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bottling plant in the central zone of Sarawak, ideally in Tanjung Manis, to strengthen energy security and ensure uninterrupted supply during emergencies.

Speaking during the motion of appreciation on the Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today, he said the recent LPG shortage in Sibu and nearby areas highlighted a critical vulnerability in the state’s supply network.

“Earlier this year, in February, many residents in Sibu and the surrounding central region experienced difficulties in obtaining LPG gas cylinders,” he said.

He explained that the shortage occurred after the Bintulu PUSAKA LPG Bottling Plant was forced to halt operations due to a landslide, which forced local distributors to collect gas from Kuching, doubling transportation distances and delaying deliveries.

He said additional transport capacity was mobilised to manage the shortage, and the Bintulu plant has since resumed operations.

“While this incident has been resolved, it revealed a structural weakness in our LPG supply network, namely the overreliance on only two bottling plants in the state: one in Kuching and one in Bintulu.”

In this regard, he proposed that Tanjung Manis be considered for the new facility, citing its strategic location and existing infrastructure.

“With its strategic location and existing industrial infrastructure, Tanjung Manis is well-positioned to serve as a dedicated supply base for Sibu, Mukah, Sarikei, Bintangor, Kapit, and nearby areas.

“This is not merely a redundancy, but a long-term strategic investment in supply chain resilience.

“A third bottling facility would strengthen our state’s energy security, reduce risks of future shortages, and ensure uninterrupted access to LPG for our people, even in times of unforeseen emergencies,” added Chieng.
