The Mercedes-AMG GT XX Concept shows us the future of electric performance luxury from Affalterbach.
Mercedes-AMG has shown the GT XX Concept – a look at what the ultimate electric 4-door performance car would look like according to their engineers and designers. It’s an electric vehicle, but AMG says the powertrain sounds and performs as well as one of their V8 petrol engines.
With the new AMG GT XX Concept, the company has finally shown a blueprint for a Porsche Taycan Turbo competitor. Sure, the brand has some electrified vehicles and EVs under the Mercedes-Benz and Maybach brands, but AMG themselves have stopped short of going full-electric. This is, of course, just a concept car, but series production (at least for some of the underlying technology) is to begin in 2026. So let’s talk about the underlying tech and platform.
The AMG GT XX is built on the new AMG.EA platform and uses a mix of aluminium, steel, and fibre composites in its body. The battery housing was designed to be part of the crash structure and its designed to go well beyond the regulatory standards for crash safety. The body is sculpted for a super low drag coefficient of just 0.198Cd and features active aerodynamics.
The drivetrain consists of 3 axial flux motors with a combined system output of 1360 horsepower. This type of motor is 3 times more power-dense while being a third of the size of conventional motors and 2/3rd the weight. The top speed is projected to be more than 360km/h, which is insane for something pure electric. There are two motors at the rear that do most of the heavy lifting, the one at the front is there when max power or grip is needed but can disconnected from wheels when efficiency is the priority. Production of the motors involved 35 world first breakthroughs and 65 processes that were completely new to Mercedes.
The battery technology is equally impressive. Developed in-house, it consists of 3,000 cylindrical cells with direct cooling using non-conductive oil. The battery chemistry uses nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), and aluminum (Al) with a silicon anode. This battery tech enables super fast charging speeds in excess of 850 kW, returning 400km in 5 minutes which would make it comparable with an ICE vehicle’s refueling rate.
There is a sustainability component to the AMG GT XX Concept as well of course – this wouldn’t be an EV without one. The interior features an alternative ‘LABFIBER’ Biotech Leather made from recycled GT3 tyres. There’s also a silk alternative used for some other interior components. The floor covering materials are 100% recycled.
If or when it goes into production, we can expect it to obviously cater to the top crop of Mercedes customers. In order to make the XX Concept standout, they’ve made a few interesting design decisions. The exterior features electroluminescent paint that glows and communicates the vehicle’s charging status. There are also speakers integrated into the headlights to communicate with pedestrians.
The MBUX Fluid Light Panel has over seven hundred programmable LEDs for rearward communication. Finally, there’s the active aero wheels with movable blades for brake cooling and aero efficiency.
