An unbearable stench led to a tragic discovery after police discovered the smell was emitting from a pair of decomposing bodies inside a flat in Penang.

The deceased were a 41-year-old woman and her two-year-old daughter, reported China Press and MalaysiaGazette.

Rotting body of M’sian woman & 2yo child found at master bedroom

According to media reports, the foul smell was detected from the ninth floor of the flat located at Jalan Bukit Gambir yesterday (June 30).

It was understood that police received a call about the incident at 4:41pm and requested assistance from the fire department to open the door, which was locked from the inside.

Upon opening the door to the unit, they found the decomposing bodies of the victims in the master bedroom.

A preliminary examination by a forensic expert from the Penang Hospital who was present at the scene indicated that the duo were believed to have been dead for more than a week.

Additionally, police also found several types of medications which was reportedly used to treat depression inside the unit.

Last seen by sister in May

According to the victim’s younger sister, who only wished to be known as Noor, she said the last time she saw the victim was back in May.

“My sister had divorced and was living here with her daughter, and we were informed that she was unemployed. The last time I saw her was when the police asked me to come to the Seberang Jaya police station to take her home,” she said.

Meanwhile, a neighbour who lived on the same floor as the victim and wanted to be anonymous, said the victim and her daughter were last seen towards the end of May.

“We’re not entirely sure who actually lives in that unit because the tenants keep changing between university students and adults.

“We also didn’t hear any noise or notice any smell from the unit before this, so we thought she (the victim) had moved out. She had mentioned before that she was planning to move and we even saw her carrying things as if she was preparing to leave.

“When I asked, she admitted the house was going to be auctioned off and she was planning to move to Seberang. But after that, we never saw her again,” recounted the neighbour.

The case has been classified as sudden death (SDR) pending a post-mortem report, which is scheduled to take place at the Penang Hospital’s Forensic Department today.
