KPDN raids Kota Samarahan premises over counterfeit watches worth nearly RM10,000

KOTA SAMARAHAN (July 12): The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sarawak recently raided a business premises here for allegedly selling counterfeit wristwatches valued at RM9,774.
KPDN Sarawak director Matthew Dominic Barin said the operation was carried out on July 9 at around 12pm by a team of seven enforcement officers, accompanied by representatives of the trademark holder.
The raid was carried out following a complaint lodged by the trademark owner concerning the alleged sale of imitation products.
“The case is being investigated under Section 102(1)(c) of the Trademarks Act 2019, for the possession, custody, or control of goods for the purpose of trade or manufacturing.
“KPDN Sarawak acted swiftly to curb the distribution of counterfeit goods in the market and to safeguard consumer rights,” Matthew said in a statement.
He also issued a stern warning that individuals found guilty under the Trademarks Act 2019 face penalties of a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment of up to three years, or both. For subsequent offences, the fine may increase to RM20,000.
For corporate offenders, the penalty is a fine not exceeding RM15,000, and up to RM30,000 for repeat offences.
He added that KPDN Sarawak will continue working closely with trademark owners and relevant agencies to protect consumer rights and uphold intellectual property laws.
“In this regard, all traders and distributors are urged to comply with existing laws and regulations,” he said.
