VPNs are legal in Malaysia. The MCMC has confirmed that using one is not against the law. Despite claims circulating online, there is no government ban on VPN services.

What VPNs do is mask your IP address and encrypt your internet connection. That helps protect your data on public Wi-Fi, reduce ad tracking, and sometimes access region-locked content. But using a VPN does not make you immune to the law. If you are committing fraud or accessing illegal sites, a VPN does not protect you.

Many Malaysians use VPNs to watch streaming content that is not available locally. While that may not be illegal, it can still violate platform terms of service. There is also no reliable data on how many Malaysians actually use VPNs. The often quoted 27 percent figure is unverified.

Recent DNS-level site restrictions have pushed more people towards VPNs. Some websites, especially alternative news outlets and file-sharing platforms, have been harder to access. A VPN can bypass these blocks, but that does not mean the content itself is legal or safe.

TL;DR: VPNs are legal. What you do with them is what matters. They are useful for security and privacy but should not be treated like a loophole.
