2025 Proton X50 now comes with RFID tag as standard, could be extended to other models

Proton has partnered with Touch ‘n Go to integrate RFID technology into the 2025 Proton X50, making it the first model in the line-up to get the toll payment feature as standard. Every unit is now pre-fitted with an RFID tag at the Tanjung Malim plant before delivery to customers.

This is not the first time a carmaker in Malaysia has done this. Perodua introduced pre-installed RFID on the Alza in 2022, followed by UMW Toyota with the Vios in 2023. Proton’s move means buyers can drive their new X50 straight onto Malaysia’s RFID-enabled highways without having to visit a fitment centre.

“It’s about instant gratification,” said Praba Sangarajoo, CEO of Touch ‘n Go Sdn. Bhd. “You drive your new Proton X50 off the showroom floor with RFID already installed, just like that. This is not just about smarter mobility; it’s about bringing real value and delight into everyday journeys.”

Zhang Qiang, Deputy CEO of Proton Edar, said the addition of RFID is part of delivering more value to customers without increasing prices. “With the launch of the all-new Proton X50, we have taken a quantum leap forward to improve the purchase value for customers by offering a new design and new technologies while keeping the price unchanged. By partnering with Touch ‘n Go, Proton is adding another new feature that fits perfectly with the model tagline of Intelligence That Amazes.”

Launched on 24 July, the 2025 Proton X50 features a new exterior and interior design, a 1.5-litre i-GT 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, and the latest connectivity upgrades. The company reports that 2,000 units of the 2025 Proton X50 have been delivered within three weeks of launch.

Proton says there is potential for RFID fitment to be extended to other models in its range. “Our aim is to improve the level of customer satisfaction, and we think this is one of the steps we can consider towards achieving that goal,” Zhang added.
