UMS rejects fee cut, prioritises water facility repairs

KOTA KINABALU (Sept 16): Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has responded to calls from a group of students, who identify themselves as Suara Mahasiswa (SM), seeking a reduction in fees following months of water supply issues on campus.

UMS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor, said after careful consideration of the group’s written request, the university concluded that a fee reduction would not be appropriate at this time.

“The funds involved are better channelled towards urgent repairs and upgrades, particularly to address campus water facilities. Solving the water issue will have a more lasting impact compared to a temporary fee cut,” he explained.

He said the decision was made in the interest of the entire campus community, with the university remaining committed to ensuring students can study in a more conducive and comfortable environment.

According to UMS, the management of fees and facilities falls under the purview of the University Management Committee and the University Board of Directors, with ongoing support from the Ministry of Higher Education.

Dr Kasim also pointed out that UMS tuition fees are already heavily subsidised by the government — more than 90 per cent — leaving students to pay only a minimal amount compared to the actual cost of study.

“This decision not to offer an additional reduction is consistent with our effort to prioritise funding for facility improvements that benefit all students,” he said.

He stressed that the Minister of Higher Education should not be blamed for this matter, adding that UMS deeply appreciates the ministry’s attention and assistance in addressing the water supply issue and other initiatives for student welfare.

UMS urged all parties to continue cooperating and to channel feedback through proper avenues so that infrastructure repairs can be carried out more effectively for the collective good.

“We are confident that with close cooperation between students, management and the ministry, the well-being of the entire campus community can be enhanced,” Dr Kasim said.
