It’s no secret that Malaysians love animals, especially strays. Whether it’s leaving kibble for cats under a flat, sharing scraps with dogs outside a mamak, or tossing rice to pigeons, these small acts of kindness are common across the country.
But while many see it as compassion, authorities argue it can also cause problems like litter, overpopulation, and disturbances in public spaces.
Viral signboard in ButterworthRecently, a signboard in Butterworth, Penang, prohibiting the feeding of stray animals went viral after TikTok user @shancool5shared it online.
The board featured clear images of cats, dogs, and even birds, animals considered strays. On the left corner, the official logo of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) was printed.
Reasons behind the banThe sign didn’t just say “no feeding”, it listed out the consequences if people continued to do so:
It also warned that offenders could face a maximum fine of RM500 under the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974, Section 47(1)(G).
Netizens reactUnsurprisingly, the ban sparked heated reactions online.
Many Malaysians condemned the move, saying feeding strays was nothing more than a humane gesture. Some even vowed to continue feeding the animals regardless of the fine.
However, others sided with the council, noting that the signboard’s explanation showed why stricter control was necessary to maintain cleanliness and public safety.
The issue has since divided netizens, with one side calling the ban cruel and the other saying it’s practical.
