KUCHING, Nov 18: Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) has supported the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Association Kuching with a total contribution of RM3.2 million to date.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is the minister-in-charge of Unifor, stated that the amount comprises RM900,000 in additional funding for the rebuilding of temple facilities.
He added that the Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has also approved RM2.3 million under Projek Rakyat for the construction of a new multipurpose hall and road access to the temple.
“These contributions demonstrate the Sarawak government’s continuous commitment to supporting all houses of worship, regardless of religion,” he said during the inaugural Sarawak-level Diwali celebration themed “Sarawak Shines: Diwali the Sarawak Way” held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here last night.
Uggah further said through Unifor’s assistance to churches, temples, gurdwara and other faith-based organisations, hundreds of houses of worship have benefited from renovation support, development funds and community grants.
“This commitment also extends to the Hindu and Sikh communities. The Sarawak government remains firmly committed to strengthening Unifor for the benefit of future generations,” he asserted.
The Diwali celebration, a first-of-its-kind State-level event, was graced by Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
Also present were Uggah’s wife Dato Doreen Mayang; Unifor director Dato Georgina Apphia Ngau and husband Peter Bryan Morrison; Sri Maha Mariamman Temple Association Kuching president Dato Shankar Ram Pohumall Asnani and wife Datin Karishma Shankar Asnani; and Penghulu of Indian community, Lucy Lingam.
