KUCHING, Nov 18: Solomon Ng Guang Zhong, 17-year-old athlete from Kuching, won the gold medal in the 17th Southeast Asian (SEA) U18 & U20 Athletics Championships 2025, competing in the Men’s U-18 5kg Hammer Throw event.

According to a press release, the event is currently being held in Medan, Indonesia, starting Nov 13 with tomorrow (Nov 19) being the last day.

To win the gold, Ng bested fellow countryman Muhammad Dzul, as well as Rafael Sooen from Indonesia and Pornanek Sekkla from Thailand—emerging victorious with a throw of 59.49m which while fell short of the games record by just a few centimetres, it ended up being a personal best.

Ng expressed surprise with the win, as Sekkla was the favourite to win, and Ng was unable to participate in the intensive centralised training leading up to the championship due to his AS Level exam as he had to rush to the airport after sitting for his last paper.

“As a young athlete and student, this is one of the challenges he faces, time management in juggling both school and training. It helps a lot that his school, Lodge International School, has always been understanding and supportive of his endeavours,” said the press release.

It added that Ng has been training under his coach, Willie Liew, since he was 12 years old where he started off with shot put and was introduced to the hammer throw when he was old enough.

Some of Ng’s notable achievements include winning a bronze medal at his first SEA Youth Athletics Championship in 2024 in Sabah (representing Malaysia, U-18 5kg – 55.77m); a gold medal at the Sarawak Junior Athletics Championship 2025 (U-20 6kg – 54.01m); a silver medal at the SIPMA Games 2025 in Johor Bahru (representing the MSSM National Team, senior 7kg category – 45.80m); and a bronze medal at the Borneo Games 2025 (senior 7kg category – youngest participant).

The press releases added that the triumph achieved is a strong finish for the 2025 athletics season and highlights what Sarawakians are capable of achieving at an international stage. — DayakDaily
