Malaysia will introduce a new generation of identification cards from June 2026, featuring stronger security safeguards and digital verification capabilities.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah told Parliament that the National Registration Department (NRD) will update three cards — MyKad, MyTentera, and MyPoCA — as part of efforts to curb forgery and modernise national ID infrastructure.

The redesign includes a QR code that allows authorities and relevant agencies to verify card authenticity digitally.

Shamsul Anuar said all changes to identity card details continue to be handled carefully to ensure accurate records. At present, applications to update certain information on MyKad are still allowed depending on the nature of the amendment.

Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin also called on the government to consider adding Bumiputera status and religious information to the updated cards, citing a recent case where a Sarawak Bumiputera individual was misidentified by a bank officer.

He said clearer markers could help prevent administrative confusion. The Home Ministry did not announce any decision on these suggestions but said all proposals will be evaluated.
