Home Minister confirms monitoring of alleged Korean-linked Christian cult in Malaysia

HOME Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has confirmed that a Christian group of Korean origin, described as deviant, is present in Malaysia and is being monitored by the police Special Branch, though its activities have not been deemed a threat to national security.

Saifuddin said the issue came under closer scrutiny after he requested the Perlis Mufti, Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, to submit detailed information on the group’s identity, activities and key figures following public claims about its existence.

He said he has since been briefed by the Special Branch and emphasised that while the group is firmly on the authorities’ radar, its operations have not crossed the threshold of a national security concern.

“I have received a briefing from the Special Branch on the organisation, its patterns of activity, involvement, and local figures. The first fact is that it is indeed on the radar of our security forces.

“However, its activities have not reached a level that can be considered a threat to national security,” he told reporters after attending a Back to School Aid programme in Kulim on Saturday.

Saifuddin said police surveillance of the group would continue, noting that the way the organisation presents itself may have led to the involvement or association of several national political figures.

“At a glance, its activities appear to take place in forms that do not immediately suggest any threat,” he added.

On Thursday, the Home Minister had urged anyone with information regarding the alleged cult to come forward and provide full details to the authorities to assist ongoing monitoring efforts.

Earlier, Dr Mohd Asri said the group, which uses the name of Jesus, is not recognised by mainstream Christian denominations. He also claimed that several Muslim Members of Parliament and prominent political figures were believed to have participated in or supported the group.

According to Asri, photographs allegedly showing their involvement with the group have been circulating for years, spanning multiple locations and countries. - December 13, 2025
