UEC issue now about federal govt delivering on promises, not recognition debate

KUCHING, Dec 29: The long-standing Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) issue should now be viewed as a matter of accountability and delivery by the federal government rather than a debate over recognition.

Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said the issue has become a test of credibility for the Pakatan Harapan-led (PH) government, which had previously promised to recognise the UEC in its manifesto.

“The current government is a PH-led government, of which DAP is part of. If you look at the Buku Jingga Pakatan Rakyat and their manifesto, what did they promise? The UEC.

“The issue is that you promised, and you are already the government, so you must deliver.

“The issue is not about saying, ‘we can’t do this because of that’. The issue is simple — if you promise, you deliver. If you do not want to deliver, or if you know you cannot deliver, then don’t promise,” he said when speaking during a Media Appreciation Night held at Grand Riverine here last night.

Yap further highlighted the importance of election manifestos, stressing that the public expects political parties to fulfil every pledge they commit to once in government.

“In the next election, the public wants to know that whatever you put into your manifesto, you are able to deliver. If you cannot deliver, don’t ever put it into the manifesto again,” he said.

Referring to the political situation in Sabah, Yap warned that the message from voters there is already clear — delivery matters more than rhetoric.

“That is why in Sabah, it is very clear already. You can say whatever you want to say — I don’t want to hear it. Just deliver. The situation in Sabah is very clear already,” he emphasised. – DayakDaily
