Misdirection Movie Ending Explained & Full Story: What Happens To Sarah And Jason?

There are times when some movies like to fidget with your brain and smudge the definitive line that separates right and wrong. I find these kinds of movies worth living for and director Kevin Lewis’ “Misdirection,” falls in that category. The movie blurs the concepts of black and white as it revolves around a bunch of grey characters. It primarily focuses on Jason and Sara, a couple who carry out money heists, having  years of experience in the field. They’re so skilled that hacking into any surveillance is a cakewalk for them; I can’t help but see the “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” reference here. In the movie, the idea of misdirection has found a profound place in almost every major part of the plot. However, I hope that you won’t get misdirected while searching for the greater evil in this game.

“Misdirection”’s neo-noir cinematography, brilliant storytelling, and the perfect balance of intrigue and violence helps the movie shine. Oh, did I forget to tell you how agile David, Frank Grillo’s character, was – despite him being just a well-known attorney in the story? At this point, Grillo has taken it up as a challenge to be the suave and he-can-play-ball kind of guy in almost every movie he is in. Apart from that, the movie has a much darker story hidden under the façade of a thriller.

What Happens in the Movie?

“Misdirection” begins with Sara suggesting to Jason that they target high-profile defense attorney David Blume and Jason immediately hack into the home security system, watching every move of the attorney. The couple is very much aware that breaking into David’s home and stealing money is going to be a challenge for them. The property is protected by a high-tech home security system. Through their hacking software, Jason notes down all the credentials they need to disable it and open the vault where David stores his cash. The duo patiently waits till David hops into his car and drives away to attend his friend Megan’s party. I should mention here that Jason and Sara have agreed that this is going to be their last heist. As David gives a heartwarming speech at the party, he meets this woman, Julie, and secretly invites her for a date. Meanwhile, Jason and Sara pull up to his lavish property, as per their plan. Once Jason disables the surveillance cameras, he blows open the main door with a chemical. He also installs a jammer inside the house to block all the nearby networks. Once all of that is done, Jason runs after the vault full of cash and instructs Sara to bag David’s expensive watches. But, Sara secretly places photos and drugs. Unfortunately, they come across a major problem when they spot the headlights of an arriving car. To their surprise, David is home. Soon, he discovers that someone has fiddled with the door lock.

Why Did Sarah Choose David as the Next Target?

When David reaches the room where he keeps the vault, he feels that something is definitely wrong. He immediately takes up his gun and scours through his house. Terrified, Sara hides. As Jason sneaks up from behind, David shoots him in the arm, and a scuffle follows. But Sara manages to knock David unconscious and ties him to the bed. When David comes back to his senses, he overhears Sara and Jason’s discussion about how to kill him. In the meantime, Julie visits David and Sara kills her in order to keep the coast clear. As the couple exchanges plans, Jason tries to shuffle through his bag, and Sara’s favorite toy falls out of it. David catches a glimpse of it. Immediately, he recognizes Sara and calls out her name.

Now, this is where Jason receives the shock of his life when he understands why Sara chose David’s house. Jason did not know this before, that Sara had a sister named Lucy, with whom David had an affair, despite being married. He was working at a law firm back then and was married to his boss’s daughter. You can already understand what he did to excel as an attorney, right? So David cut Lucy off from his life without any hesitation. Unable to withstand the grief, Lucy killed herself. Before going any further, let me tell you something first. I firmly believe that no matter how strong we become or how time flies, some memories remain unforgettable. These are mostly the painful ones and the ones about losses. Jason and Sara were hell-bent on pulling off one last heist before calling it quits. However, Sara is misdirected from the robbery by the idea of revenge. 

Sara thinks that David is responsible for her sister’s death. To frame him as the bigger villain in Jason’s eyes, she plants photos of a tortured child and a bag of drugs in David’s bedroom while Jason is busy stealing money. This explains why she is the one who keeps stalling Jason from escaping from the property. With David tied to bed, Sara constantly urges Jason to kill the attorney. She is so desperate to avenge her sister that when Jason talks about how he is an ex-convict and disagrees to take David’s life, she decides to murder the attorney herself. This whole revelation instantly spoils Sara and Jason’s chemistry as David, with a smirk on his face, watches the couple fight.

Is David a Villain in This Movie?

Needless to say, David is definitely not the one behind the photos or the drugs. However, he does have sinister intentions. The revelation sparked a rift between the couple. Jason starts to question every move of Sara. He forgets their history together, and he has a heated verbal exchange before throwing away the box of drugs. By this point, it clearly seems like Jason has had enough. As he goes on to untie David, Sara points her gun and threatens him to stop. Sara ties Jason to the bed frame right beside David while she prepares a lethal drug injection for the defense attorney. Taking advantage of the situation, David convinces Jason that Sara is a liar. With Jason’s help, he ultimately breaks free.

While Sara tries to inject David, subdues her before injecting her with the drug she prepared for him. We get to see the true self of David when he kicks Jason in the face instead of untying his hands. The effect of the drugs slows Sara down, who crawls away from David as he chases her with a gun. All this time, David’s words made me believe that he was never a murderer. David finally confesses that he is indeed responsible for Lucy’s death; she did not kill herself when he broke up with her, it is him who overdosed her, having prior knowledge of her being an addict. But this does not sum up how twisted David really is. When David was tied up, he was visited by Julie, who left her car in the driveway. Julie’s husband, Jack, spots that and arrives to confront David and get shot from point-blank range. . Knowing this might incriminate him, David makes sure that he uses Sara’s gun for it. But David wants to kill Sara and hence follows her with a gun.

What Happens to Sara and Jason?

The moment Sara witnesses David killing Jack, she knows that this is not going to end well. Still under the effects of the drugs, manages to reach the kitchen table and stabs David with a knife. But David is not going down this easily as he keeps following Sara. While all of this is going on, Jason tries best to untie himself. Jason’s trust in Sara reached an all-time low when he got misdirected by David’s manipulating words. But that doesn’t mean he’s going to allow someone like David killing Sara, no way she deserves that. Jason fails to break his ties but removes himself from the frame. By the time he reaches downstairs, David has cornered Sara in the swimming area.

Despite his hands being tied, Jason tries his best to take David down. But David overpowers Jason and tries to choke the life out of him, by holding his head under the water. Thankfully for Jason, Sara picks up the knife and fatally stabs David in the chest. As he bleeds out, David reacts with shock, indicating that he did not expect to lose this fight. Sara and Jason escape and find safety. But Jason still cannot get both David’s words and Sara’s secretive nature out of his mind so he decides to walk away after setting their car on fire. Sara stands there in utter disbelief and shock. With eyes full of regret, confusion, and grief, she keeps looking in the direction where Jason is walking before heading her separate way. She knew it was their last mission together but never expected this to be the end of the road for them as a couple.
