There is a ritual most internet users repeat almost daily.
A pop-up appears. It links to Terms of Service or a Privacy Policy. You scroll briefly, tap Agree and carry on.
Almost no one reads what they just accepted.
Terms of Service; Didn’t Read, known as ToS;DR, was created to address that gap. Launched in 2012, the project describes itself as an attempt to fix what it calls the biggest lie on the web, the idea that people meaningfully read and understand the contracts they accept online.
Instead of rewriting legal documents in full, ToS;DR breaks them down into short, clear points. Volunteer contributors review privacy policies and terms of service line by line. They extract specific clauses and label them good, neutral, bad or, in more serious cases, blocker.
A blocker highlights provisions that may significantly affect user rights. That can include broad data-sharing permissions, the ability to terminate accounts without explanation or clauses that allow companies to change terms unilaterally.
Once enough points are collected, a formula generates an overall grade from A to E.
Some services display No Grade Yet when not enough information has been analysed.
Large platforms such as Facebook, Amazon, YouTube and Apple are among the services reviewed. Their policies influence how user data is handled, how content can be removed and how disputes are resolved. Yet those documents are often longer than most people would realistically read.
How To Use ToS;DRStart by searching for the service you are interested in. Each listing displays an overall grade if available, along with a summary of key points extracted from its terms.
You can click into individual findings to see the exact clause being discussed and how contributors classified it.
The scoring is transparent and the reasoning is visible. If you disagree, you can participate. The project allows users to contribute analyses and help expand coverage.
Many services still lack grades, which reflects the volunteer-driven nature of the platform. The goal is ongoing review rather than a fixed ranking.
Digital services run on contracts. Those contracts determine what companies can do with your data, how they can change rules and what happens if your account is suspended.
ToS;DR does not eliminate legal complexity. It reduces it to something readable. It turns abstract policy language into identifiable trade-offs.
You still click Agree. You just know more about what that means.
