'Salvageland' Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Is Jules Dead?

Netflix’s Filipino crime thriller film Salvageland is one of those films that makes you wonder why it was made in the first place! A very run-of-the-mill story with a predictable ending, there is nothing new that the film has to say or offer. Salvageland is centered around Jules Morales and his father, Sergeant Ernesto Morales. Jules was an enthusiastic cop who believed in doing good for society, and when he came across dismembered body parts along the old highway on the lahar, he figured they must investigate the matter. But his father, the Sergeant, instructed him not to get involved. Since his father was his senior, he couldn’t disregard his opinion. He was devastated to discover that his father had already applied for his promotion and was soon to be transferred. But Jules refused to let the case go. Life had taught Sarge that the only way to stay safe was by following orders and not digging too deep into things that could land him and his son in trouble. So, he wanted his son to stay out of the mess. The notorious highway patrol, who were known to be on the syndicate’s payroll, were handed the case. But did Jules choose to walk away, or did he solve the case?

Spoiler Alert

Who were the murderers?

The highway patrol officers appreciated Sarge for not poking his nose into matters related to the syndicate. They even praised him for ensuring his son’s transfer, but just as Jules and Sarge were about to leave the spot, the officers noticed the young man hiding something. They soon discovered that he was attempting to steal evidence (a dismembered hand), and when they tried to stop him, he pulled out his gun. Jules explained that he feared the officers would ignore the evidence just like they did twice previously. He’d hoped to identify the victim from the fingerprint, and he believed the result could help them identify more victims. Sarge figured this son would get in trouble if he continued to threaten the officers, so he intervened, although Sarge feared that as a result of his one silly move, the officers would block his promotion. Jules didn’t care; he was rather glad that he didn’t have to spend all his time behind a desk instead of doing actual police work. When Jules tried to establish the involvement of the syndicate in the murders, his father suspended him. He was afraid that his son’s passion would land him in trouble. Jules couldn’t believe that the man who was once awarded medals for his bravery chose to remain silent in the face of injustice. Although he was suspended, Jules was determined to continue with his investigation. Jules was riding back home when he came across a woman who needed medical assistance. Sally was running from her obsessive, monstrous husband, Donald, who also happened to be a member of the syndicate. Jules brought an unconscious Sally to the station, and his father didn’t know how to react. He decided to find out if there was anyone looking for her, and he ran into Donald. When he showed the sergeant a picture of his wife, he confirmed that she was safe. He shared the information with those at the station. Sally had regained consciousness by then, and as soon as she discovered that Donald had found out where she was, she was terrified.

Jules immediately realized that Sally was trying to run away from her husband, and she begged him to save her. Sally went on to reveal that her husband was a murderer. She filed a complaint stating that Mia, Donald, and Caloy ran a syndicate named the ‘Navarro.’ Their primary business was jacking cars, dismantling them into pieces, and transporting the parts through the highway to the pier. When she was asked to prove her allegations, she promised to take the cops to their shop. She also added that was where they killed the drivers of the cars and chopped them into pieces. They then dumped the dismembered body parts in ‘Salvageland.’ The old highway to the lahar—the syndicate’s goal was to secure this particular area so that they could use it to their advantage. They got away with carjacking and murder, and at present they planned on dabbling in the drug business. Since they could offer safe passage to the pier, they were of significant value to the drug mafia. When Sally was asked why she’d decided to escape, she explained that she was pregnant and didn’t want to raise her child with a violent man. Her parents never cared about her happiness; they gladly accepted money from Donald even though they knew he abused Sally. But she wanted better for her child, and that was why she refused to give up without a fight. She begged Jules not to hand her over to the highway patrol, since they were entirely controlled by the Navarro.

Meanwhile, Sarge’s conversation with Donald also took a dark turn when he asked him if his wife intentionally walked away from him. He noticed the gun Donald was carrying, and he instructed him to hand it over. Donald was ready for anything just to get to Sally. The highway patrol soon arrived, and they instructed Sarge to bring Sally to their office so that Donald could reunite with her. Sarge was asked not to mess with them, especially since he was already so close to retirement.

What had happened with Sarge’s wife?

The Sarge had decided to hand Sally over to the highway patrol, but Jules refused to do so. He tried to explain that Sally was in danger, but his father didn’t seem to care. He told Jules that if he didn’t want to get hurt, then he must not interfere, especially since it had nothing to do with them. Jules had a strong moral compass, so when the Sarge arrived at the station, he discovered that the woman was missing. His son explained that he’d sent her to a hospital in an ambulance, and the Sarge knew that they would be in trouble for not following instructions. When the Sarge explained the situation to the highway patrol, he refused to believe him and asked one of the officers to contact the nearby hospital to find out if the Sarge was telling the truth. Meanwhile, one of the highway patrol officers asked the Sarge why his son was carrying a gun even though he’d been suspended that morning. Jules couldn’t hold back his anger and blurted out that he had information that the highway patrol worked for the syndicate. The officer was shocked, and he criticized Sarge for not teaching his son better. By the time the hospital responded, Donald had entered the station with his gun, and the moment the hospital staff disclosed that no ambulance had been dispatched, he pulled his gun and shot Garin (a police officer who had been with Jules when he brought Sally to the station). The situation escalated into a shootout. When Jules discovered that Donald had found Sally’s hiding spot, he attempted to stop the monstrous man. Donald overpowered him, and just as he was about to shoot Jules, Sarge stormed in and knocked him out. Jules promised to protect Sally at all costs, and when she appreciated his dedication, he mentioned that his mother had taught him to help others at all costs, and his father had taught him to be brave. Jules and Ernesto got some time alone to discuss the situation, and the young man noticed the bonsai his mother used to care for. We soon discover that the reason why Sarge was so afraid of taking a stand was because he’d lost his wife in an attempt to be brave. He regretted not listening to others when he was asked to give up on a case and not testify against a drug syndicate because it was evident that he would end up getting caught in the crossfire between two rival syndicates. But he didn’t listen; he wanted to do what was right, and as a result, the drug syndicate fired at his house, and his wife was shot. He didn’t want to lose Jules by making the same mistake, and he begged his son to let the chief handle the case.

Jules couldn’t shrug off the feeling that even the chief could be in bed with the syndicate, and he refused to do anything that could put Sally and her unborn child at risk. His plan was to take Sally and Donald to the prosecutor’s office in Puerto and directly file a case. When his father tried to stop him, Jules begged him to live by the oath he’d taken and serve those who truly needed his help. He reminded his father that unless they took down the Navarro or other syndicates, they would continue to push them into a corner and make them choose between ‘being a good father or a respectable cop.’

Does Jules die?

Donald was put behind bars, and by the time Jules took his phone away, he discovered that he’d already informed his siblings and they were on their way. Donald laughed at them; he knew that once his siblings arrived with their gang, Jules and his father didn’t stand a chance. The Sarge figured that their focus should be on protecting Sally, since she was their only witness who could testify against the syndicate and also the cops who’d been working for them. Sally informed Sarge that she knew how to handle a gun, and she wanted to fight for her life, and she expressed her gratitude to Sarge and Jules. They planned on leaving the station for Puerto, but before they could do so, Mia, Caloy, and their mercenaries arrived. Sarge held Donald at gunpoint, hoping they wouldn’t immediately attack. Caloy proposed that they come to an agreement instead of fighting each other. He was ready to bribe Sarge and Jules, but they weren’t interested, and Sarge warned them that if they didn’t leave, there would be a bloodbath. And well, he was right. The siblings refused to leave, and when one of their men tried to slyly enter the station, Jules took him down, and it immediately resulted in a shootout. Sarge shot Mia when she attempted to kill him; meanwhile, Jules got shot in the leg, and he asked Sally to run for her life.

During Salvageland’s ending, when Sarge managed to make it to the spot where Jules was hiding, he discovered that his son was wounded. Although he wanted to stay back and help him take down the men, Jules begged him to follow Sally and ensure that she was safe. Sarge noticed Sally running through the lahar, and as soon as she slipped and fell, Donald grabbed hold of her. He wanted to forgive her, and he begged her to come home with him. But when she refused, he was ready to pull the trigger on her. To save herself, Sally showed him a sonography picture of the baby she was carrying. Donald became emotional, and when Caloy approached them and was ready to take down Sally, Donald attempted to stop his brother. Caloy tried to explain to his brother that Sally was a threat to their business, but he refused to listen, so he ended up shooting him. Sally tried to run for her life, and Caloy followed her. Although Sarge’s vision wasn’t as sharp as it used to be, he shot down his target. Caloy was dead, and Sally was finally free. It was dawn when Jules arrived at the lahar. He had been shot in the abdomen, and he could barely walk. But he had successfully managed to take down all the mercenaries, and before he took his final breath, he asked his father to never give up on the fight.

What does the final scene suggest?

Sarge was devastated as he held Jules’ lifeless body in his arms. He’d lost his wife and now his son; there was nothing holding him back anymore. It was only him and his revenge. Sally alerted Sarge that Donald was missing from the scene, implying that he’d somehow survived and managed to escape. Considering how obsessed Donald is with Sally, he is definitely going to find a way to get back to her. Also, she is carrying his child, so he won’t let her be. He would either abduct Sally and compel her to be with him, or he’ll kill both her and their child because he would rather have them dead than alive and estranged. The final scene suggests that Sally and Sarge would be on high alert. Perhaps Sally will testify against the syndicate in court, and cops will be on the lookout for Donald. Who knows, maybe Sarge will become a father figure in Sally’s life, and together they will form an unusual family and raise the child with a high sense of integrity and a strong moral compass. The fight is far from over, and even if Sarge retires, he will continue to take down evil men like Donald for the sake of his wife and son.
