War Machine 2026 Cast And Character Guide

Science fiction action flick “War Machine,” directed by Patrick Hughes, whose most famous works to date are “The Expendables 3″ and “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” and its sequel, has dropped on Netflix. The film was released earlier this year, but only in the theaters of Australia. The main USP of “War Machine” is Alan Ritchson, aka our favorite Jack Reacher, who is headlining the ensemble. In this article, we’re going to take a closer look at what Ritchson and the other actors are playing in “War Machine.”
Alan Ritchson as 81Yes, the name of the character is never revealed, and he goes by the number only, like several other characters; “War Machine” is cool like that. 81 is a staff sergeant in the military who travels all the way to Afghanistan in order to help his brother, but they get attacked by the Taliban. 81 does manage to survive, but loses his brother, leading him to wallow in guilt and grief. A few years later, 81 joins a Ranger Regiment, where he actually receives the name (technically the number) 81. Initially, he is silent and grumpy and doesn’t prove to be a team player. However, he eventually comes around when things get bad after a strange science fiction twist in the tale—an asteroid time machine that is evil. Even though a lot of his compatriots end up dead, 81 manages to save the day by teaming up with fellow staff sergeant 7.
Alan Ritchson plays 81 in a very nonchalant, cool manner, and it feels like he was born to play parts like this. The American actor has everything that was needed for the role—great physique, decent acting chops, and a towering screen presence. The “Reacher” actor is a famous face, as he has also played two popular DC Comics characters, Aquaman in the CW Superman series “Smallville” and Hawk in the HBO Max series “Titans.” The actor has also appeared in the comedy series “Blue Mountain State” and the science fiction series “Blood Drive,” where he played the lead.
Dennis Quaid as Sergeant Major SheridanDennis Quaid, an actor who is no stranger to playing military characters, plays Army Sergeant Major Sheridan in the regiment that 81 joins. He, along with another officer, First Sergeant Torres, sends 81 on the mission that becomes the crux of the story. Quaid is pretty great in his role, even though he doesn’t have much material to work with. The actor has been around for a long time, being part of a lot of popular movies, like “Far From Heaven,” for which he got a Golden Globe nod, as well as “The Parent Trap,” “Frequency,” “Vantage Point,” and many others. Most recently, Quaid was seen playing a really bad guy in the instant classic body-horror film “The Substance,” directed by Coralie Fargeat. Quaid has also played US President Ronald Reagan in the recent biographical movie (of the same name), but both his performance and the movie were received poorly.
Esai Morales as First Sergeant TorresEsai Morales, who is known for playing bad guys on screen as well as characters in the military/army, is cast as First Sergeant Torres in the regiment. Both he and Sheridan are skeptical over 81’s questionable state of mind, but they also let him proceed with the mission as well. Like Quaid, Morales also doesn’t exactly have much of a meaty role, thanks to the lackluster screenplay of the film.
Morales has got fame due to his very recent role of playing the main villain, Gabriel, in the final two “Mission Impossible” movies. He is also known for playing the very scary Del in the Netflix series “Ozark” and Lieutenant Tony Rodriguez in “NYPD Blue” as well as supervillain Deathstroke in HBO’s “Titans,” where his “War Machine” co-star, Alan Ritchson, also played a major role, making this movie a reunion between them.
Stephen James as 7Staff Sergeant 7 is the second-in-command of 81, and his character is almost the second lead of the movie. It is 7 who helps 81 save the day in the end. In what was aimed as a big reveal during the climax, 7 lets 81 know that he also knew 81’s dead brother, making the whole arc a bit more emotional for our main character. Stephen James plays the character competently. The actor’s most famous role has been in director Barry Jenkins’ critically acclaimed “If Beale Street Could Talk,” where he played the lead character of Fonny. James has also appeared in the popular Prime series “Homecoming,” for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination in the lead category.
Jai Courtney as the brother of Sergeant 81Even though Jai Courtney’s character, who is the brother of Ritchson’s 81, dies early on in the movie, he plays an important role by affecting the emotional fabric of our lead character. It’s the death of his brother that puts 81 in a depressed mental state, and he finds his way out by the end. Courtney seems to be the right actor for the role, considering the kind of work he has done in the past. The formally trained Australian actor broke into the scene thanks to his roles in the science fiction fantasy movie franchise “Divergent,” where he played Eric Coulter. Subsequently, he gained more popularity after playing Kyle Reese in “Terminator Genisys,” as well as Captain Boomerang in both “Suicide Squad” and “The Suicide Squad,” which was both a soft reboot of and sequel to the first movie.
Miscellaneous CharactersOther than the main characters, “War Machine” also had several supporting characters, mostly part of the regiment. Keiynan Lonsdale, who played Wally West in the CW series “The Flash,” plays 60; Daniel Webber, who was in the science fiction series “11.22.63,” plays 57; and Jack Patten, who was the lead in the 2025 series adaptation of Robin Hood, appears as 109 in the movie.
