Jockey Movie Recap And Ending Explained: Are Ramar And Meenu Dead?

Director Pragabhal’s “Jockey” revolves around the clash between two goat-fighting men, one of them being an auto rickshaw driver and the other hailing from upper-class. Set against the backdrop of rural Madurai, the movie looks very simple on the surface, where the only agenda the two characters have is winning goat fights. But in reality, it takes you deep into the exploration of raw emotions of people, symbolizing power struggles with vicious goat fights. Pragabhal’s “Jockey” also explores dark yet realistic themes like casteism, the social division of rich and poor, and the misuse of power.

What happens in the film?

“Jockey” begins with Karthi arriving at the goat-fighting competition with his goons and his goat. Because of arriving a bit late, he fails to find an opponent to fight against. Given that Karthi’s uncle is a powerful local leader and a member of the goat-fighting federation, he tries hard to find an opponent. Soon, Ramar, an auto rickshaw driver, steps into the arena with his goat and challenges Karthi without knowing his identity. Despite becoming a subject of mockery by the people around him, Ramar’s goat defeats Karthi’s goat without much struggle and breaks its horns. As Karthi’s uncle and members of the federation crown Ramar with the medal of the goat-fighting champion of Madurai, Ramar leaves the arena cheering with his friends. This leaves Karthi boiling with rage, but he does not express it in front of the federation.

Upon reaching home, Ramar and his family celebrate his win. Ramar takes the medal and hangs it on his dead father’s photo, who was once a famous goat fighter of Madurai. His sister, who is a widow and a mother to a girl, urges Ramar to take care of the goat. After feeding the goat, Ramar drives his family to a temple, and on the way, he comes across Meenu. While driving her to her house, Ramar starts to fall in love with Meenu. While Ramar dreams of having a future with Meenu, Karthi devises a plan to become the goat fighting champion, but one day, he gets into a verbal feud with his goat’s trainer. While they fight, Ramar and his uncle arrive on the scene, and Ramar praises the goat, despite its defeat. Shortly after that, following his uncle’s advice, Ramar offers to buy Karthi’s goat. This leaves Karthi baffled for a bit before he gets angry at Ramar. Just when Ramar approaches to offer a price for the goat, Karthi pulls out a knife and cuts the throat of his goat in front of everyone. As Ramar stands there baffled, soaked with the goat’s blood, Karthi warns Ramar that he will make his life a living hell.

Why Does Karthi Hate Ramar?

Ramar did not know it, but his father and his brother-in-law were dead because of Karthi and his men. “Jockey” never showed how they died but clearly established that Karthi’s hunger for power was a major reason behind their demise. But I can assure you that it was not the only reason. Karthi comes from a rich, upper-class family. His uncle has a powerful personality and a well-respected man in Madurai, with a lot of political connections. Although Karthi’s uncle never takes pride in his social and economic status, Karthi is an egoistic man who looks down upon people belonging to the lower strata of society. The indirect signs of casteism in rural Madurai echo how a lot of lives across the country still suffer from this curse. When Karthi looks at Ramar, he always taunts him by addressing his profession as an auto rickshaw driver. It’s his pride that pushes Karthi into denial. He never accepts his defeat, and instead of preparing well, he plans on cutting corners in his life.

One day, he gets a new goat and challenges Ramar to a goat fight to reclaim the glory like “a man.” Ramar accepts the challenge. But during the fight, one of Karthi’s men shoots Ramar’s goat near its horn, and ultimately, Karthi’s new goat takes away the win. Karthi’s men even snatch Ramar’s goat away from him, and by the time Ramar retrieves it from their hideout, the goat is almost dead. Karthi manages to break Ramar temporarily, but after careful nursing, the goat lives. After Ramar manages to make one of Karthi’s men confess in front of Karthi’s uncle, Karthi faces humiliation in front of the federation and the elders. This pushes Karthi to the edge because he never expects an auto-rickshaw driver to tarnish his image like that.

One night, when Ramar is away from home, spending intimate moments with Meenu, Karthi and his men come and storm his house in search of Ramar’s goat. Karthi even sets fire to Ramar’s father’s portrait. When Karthi and his men are unable to find any of them, they scare his sister. One of Karthi’s men tears away Ramar’s niece’s ear. Meanwhile, some of Karthi’s men also attack Ramar and Meenu. Ramar escapes with his girlfriend just in time. When Ramar comes home and finds out about Karthi’s actions, he comes to Karthi’s house to take revenge. However, Karthi subdues a vengeful Ramar and almost shatters his face by punching him hard. Eventually, Karthi’s uncle stops him and the elders of Karthi’s house urge Karthi and Ramar to let their goats decide who the bigger man is.

Do Ramar And Meenu Stay Alive In The End?

Meenu came into Ramar’s life all of a sudden. She was also way richer than Ramar and worked in an office, but unlike Karthi, she never looked down upon Ramar’s status in the society. In the beginning, she was a bit skeptical about the whole thing, considering that Ramar was a complete stranger back then. With time, she started spending more time with Ramar and discovered a softer side that no one probably saw before. Ramar also found peace within Meenu amidst the chaotic and power-hungry landscape of rural Madurai. However, their romance faced a major hurdle from Karthi. The night when Ramar escaped with Meenu in his auto rickshaw, he saved Meenu’s life. From that day, Meenu never wanted to leave Ramar’s side.

Before Karthi and Ramar go to the final goat fight, Karthi’s men spike Ramar’s cigarette. As a result, when the fight starts, Ramar starts coughing when he wants to give instructions to his goat and a helpless Meenu has to watch her beloved cough up blood.Ramar’s goat also stops attacking since it fails to hear any instruction. A time comes when Karthi makes his goat hit Ramar and knock him out, but just when the Federation is about to declare Karthi as the winner, Ramar gets up. A vicious battle follows, and Ramar’s goat emerges victorious. But as they say, old habits die hard. Despite the elders’ intervention, Karthi has already tipped off the policemen to stay clear of the arena. As soon as the fight ends and Karthi’s uncle hands the goat-fight medal to Ramar, Karthi lets his claws out. His men pick up blades and surround Ramar and Meenu. “Jockey” never shows what happens after Karthi signals his men, leaving Ramar and Meenu’s fate ambiguous. However, considering how fired up Ramar is, he can easily fight off Karthi’s men to save Meenu and himself.
