The Forbidden City Movie Ending Explained And Full Story: Does Mei And Marcello Get Their Revenge?

Using the historical backdrop of China’s one-child policy as the backdrop of his narrative is quite a unique idea adopted by Italian director Gabriele Mainetti for his 2025 action thriller, “The Forbidden City.” Sadly, the context didn’t amount to much by the end as it went down the track of a traditional revenge saga. While juggling themes of family, migrant crisis, and vengeance, the narrative could have fared better had it not followed a derivative structure. For all its trope-y drawbacks, “The Forbidden City” does shine with its violent one-woman army spectacle, putting fast-paced, sleek martial arts action on display.

Mei’s Connection With Yun: What Brought Mei to Rome?

To curb the population boom following large-scale industrialization of the country, the Chinese government introduced the one-child policy during the late 70s. The prohibition against having multiple children was so strict that violation of the policy resulted in massive fines, sanctions of social and economic amenities, and loss of employment. The enforcers were ruthless enough to even practice forced abortions and sterilizations in order to ensure the stringent rule was maintained. As the movie opens in a pastoral setting in 1995 in the Fujian province of China, viewers get introduced to the young sisters duo, Yun and Mei, and their parents, martial arts teacher Xiao and his wife, Yuxin. To keep the existence of their second child, Mei, hidden from the rest of the world, the couple has no choice except to keep her inside their house since her birth throughout her formative years. Yun was able to experience a regular upbringing, social exposure, and education, and enjoy the freedom life had to offer, whereas Mei’s existence was bereft of all of that. It’s easy to comprehend as to why a young Mei, who was unaware about the political and social entanglements that forced her parents to keep her from living life as she wished, started hating her elder sister out of jealousy towards her. Yun loved her sister dearly and wanted to let her enjoy the freedom she desperately craved. Once the one-child policy ended in 2015, the Chinese government provided the option to legitimize unregistered children in exchange for a significant amount of money. Yun, who had the education and social skills to make a living, decided to leave her homeland to venture to Rome, determined to earn the freedom of her sister. Alone in a foreign land and belonging from a humble background, Yun is exploited like a number of other Chinese migrants and gets dragged into local gangster/ restaurateur, Hang’s sex trafficking racket. With Yun going missing under mysterious circumstances, Mei decides to go to Rome and look for her sister.

Unlike her elder sister, Mei is a highly skilled martial artist whose talent was recognized at an early age by their father. It is possible that she honed that particular skill of hers to a superhuman level to find self-validation while living most of her life hidden from the rest of the world. Mei knows her sister is in deep trouble after learning she has been taken to Hang’s prostitution business and starts her search. Infiltrating Hang’s sex trafficking network, Mei beats up his cronies and learns Yun’s connection with a café owner named Alfredo.

What happened to Yun and Alfredo?

Mei tracks down Alfredo’s café, which is presently run by his son, Marcelo, in his absence, and beats him up by suspecting him to be in cahoots with whatever shady business his father is involved in. However, Marcelo, who is a chef by profession, is struggling to maintain their family café business with his mother, Lorena, is also searching for answers regarding his father’s disappearance and, like Mei, is in the dark about the entire ordeal. The language barrier makes the interaction between Mei and Marcelo much more troubling, as a translator device is not enough for Mei to get all the answers she is looking for.

As Mei leaves, Marcelo shares details about the incident with Annibale, a local loan shark/mob boss and Alfredo’s close friend, who makes his earnings by exploiting migrants. In the guise of helping the poor migrants who arrive at Rome in search of opportunities, Annibal seizes their belongings, makes sure to forever keep them in his debt, effectively forcing them to beg on the streets or perform other menial jobs to pay his commission. In fact, ever since Alfredo went missing, Annibale has kept his family in debt, which Marcelo hopes in vain to pay off one day. Learning that a Chinese immigrant woman has caused a ruckus. An extremely racist Annibale believes he needs to keep their home turf from getting taken over by outsiders like Hang and sees Mei’s attack as a direct affront to his influence. Annibale threatens Hang by visiting his restaurant. Mei beats up two of Annibale’s accomplices, prompting the mob boss to force his immigrant workers to act as his enforcers in order to find her out. All the while, Annibale continues to persuade Marcelo to locate Mei, mentioning her as the root cause of their problem. It should also be mentioned that Annibale has feelings for Lorena, and during his occasional visits to the café, he tries to woo her, even though Lorena has not been able to move on yet.

Mei manages to extract intel from one of the members of Hang’s crew, who brings her and Marcelo to the location where Alfredo and Yun have been buried. A devastatedMei blames Alfredo for the tragic fate of her sister, and later on, a distraught Marcelo learns from Annibale that Alfredo had fallen in love with Yun. As Annibale reveals, Alfredo wanted to have a life with Yun by turning his back on his family and wanted to get Yun out of Hang’s prostitution racket, which resulted in Hang killing them both. Enraged, Marcelo tries to go on his own to confront Hang in his restaurant, and needless to say, he gets thrown out by his goons within seconds. Mei, who has learned about everything by eavesdropping on Annibale’s and Marcelo’s conversation, attempts to kill Hang but gets outnumbered by his thugs. A grievously injured Mei somehow escapes with her life, and Marcelo’s sous chef, Santi, rescues her. As a poor immigrant who has his family to look after, Santi cannot keep a fugitive like Mei at his apartment for long, and he requests Marcelo to help her instead.

Given how they got off on the wrong foot during their first meeting, Marcelo initially hesitates to help Mei, and it also seems he will adhere to Annibale’s suggestion and give her up. However, the mutual agony of losing someone close helps Marcelo and Mei to reconcile, and going against Annibale’s directives and threats, Marcelo decides to protect her. Marcelo decides to take Mei on a city tour across Rome, and the experience allows Mei, who never enjoyed freedom quite like this, to finally open up to Marcelo about the motive behind her quest of vengeance. Unlike Marcelo, who doesn’t find the prospect of revenge to be fulfilling, Mei can’t find peace until she sees Yun’s killers dead. Given how Mei never had a regular upbringing, it can be assumed that her stunted emotional growth makes it impossible for her to find closure, as she regrets never being able to tell Yun how much she loved her. Finding Marcelo as someone to share burdens with, Mei falls for him as well as the duo comes close.

Do Mei and Marcelo get their revenge?

Hell-bent on getting her revenge, Mei plans to ambush Hang by visiting his son Maggio’s concert. Hang shares a complicated relationship with his son, who detests him for his criminal dealings and has chosen to keep away from him. Hang, proud of his son’s achievements as a singer, is willing to support him nevertheless, and keeping his identity hidden, he pays a visit to Maggio’s concert. Spotting Mei in the crowd, Hang tries to escape, to no avail, as Mei soon catches up and a prolonged brawl ensues. Eventually, Hang gets fatally stabbed by Mei, and before succumbing to his injuries, he confesses that he had killed Yun. However, there is more to the incident, as he reveals to Mei that in his desperate attempt to free Mei from the prostitution ring, Alfredo was even willing to sell his café. Annibale tried to stop him, asking him to consider his wife Lorena’s and son Marcelo’s futures. However, given what a feckless human being Annibale is, viewers can rightly assume that his requests to Alfredo don’t come from a genuine concern about his friend. By giving away his cafe to Hang, Alfredo would have inadvertently weakened Annibale’s influence. When Alfredo refused to adhere to Annibale’s request and signed the papers to give away the ownership of his café to Hang, an enraged Annibale shot him to death.

Returning to Marcelo, Mei reveals the truth about his father’s demise. Marcelo, who had encouraged Lorena to move on with her life and knows Annibale will be trying to get together with her, decides to stop this monster from ruining his family life ever again. Marcelo approaches Annibale while he is on a date with Lorena, and his cryptic mentions about Alfredo’s past connections have the mob boss all flustered. As Annibale decides to leave, Marcelo directly confronts him about killing his father and pokes at his insecurities. Marcelo doesn’t cower away from calling Annibale a backstabbing coward who exploited every relation he ever had. Mei, fearing Marcelo is going to take a hasty decision in his enraged condition, rushes to the café and finds Lorena present. As an enraged Annibale holds Marcelo at gunpoint, a confused Lorena arrives at the scene accompanied by Mei. Perhaps a sliver of humanity was still left in Annibale, as seeing the woman he loves be present and witness him at his most vulnerable, he is riddled with guilt and decides to shoot himself to death. As his cover got blown up, Annibale knew then and there that he would never be able to be with Lorena, and in absolute shame, he chose to take his own life instead.

Years later, Marcelo is revealed to have left his café to the care of his mother and the rest of the migrant workers whom Annibale exploited through the years. Marcelo is not willing to let his father’s past affect his family’s future, and he has renamed their café after his mother, Lorena, to honor her instead. Marrying Mei, Marcelo has moved to China, and the couple are adjusting to their new role as parents. Hopefully, Mei and Marcelo will be able to heal her wounds by raising a family of her own; demons of the past will not affect the future of their children.
