What happens in the film?“Agent Zeta” kicks off with mysterious deaths occurring all across the world. An unknown assassin is selectively killing off former agents of this Spanish organization named CESID who once went on Mission Ciénaga at the Ciénaga Ranch. Nobody knows what happened there except the agents, and the rising death toll worries Elena, the current Spanish National Intelligence (CNI) chief. As she looks up the files of the murdered agents, Elena discovers that one, Salvador Ancares, an CESID member, is still alive and missing. She flies to Spain and meets Iago, a CNI agent who is currently on leave, looking after her sick mother, Sara. Initially, Iago, who works under the code name Zeta, disagrees, but later, he gets ready for the mission thinking that Ancares is his estranged father. He arrives at Columbia, where Ancares was last seen. Zeta recovers a video of Ancares and some GPS code, but soon, Alfa, an agent of the Colombian Intelligence Service, drives away with his bag. After Zeta chases her down, Alfa promises that she will be able to say more about Operation Ciénaga and location if the CNI allows her and Zeta to work together.
As Zeta and Alfa walk into a cemetery following the GPS coordinates, they notice some strange men in the vicinity. They try to confront them, but soon, a group of thugs surrounds them from all sides, catching them off guard. The goons take Zeta to a secret hideout where he finds Ancares, and Alfa keeps an eye on the situation. Together, they fight the goons, extract Ancares, and bring him to the CNI Headquarters. Zeta comes back to the hotel. Ancares, sneaking into the restroom, secretly wears an earpiece. Zeta finds Marlon, Vivi, and Flaco, three men who work for Ancares, in his apartment. Although he is panicked, they assure him that it’s ultimately Ancares’ orders.
What Was the Purpose of Operation Ciénaga?Thirty-seven years ago, Ancares was investigating drug dealers, and during a drug bust, he came to know about two big names in the market, Sito Baltar and Esteban Furiase. They dealt with cocaine and all kinds of firearms. However, the CNI came to know that apart from Baltar and Furiase, Spain had a much bigger threat. A local mob boss named Tirapu was making moves with a guerilla terrorist organization named the ETA, who wanted to rule Spain. Tirapu had direct links with Baltar and Furiase, who had been funding the militia with their drug money. Soon, things started to go out of hand when Tirapu started to attack civilians in the city and even blew up police officers in broad daylight.
For the CNI, Tirapu, Furiase, and Baltar were untouchables due to their power, but the situation was becoming hard for the incumbent Spanish government. CNI got a lead that all three of them would be present at the Flower Festival, and it would be a perfect chance to neutralize them. So they organized a team of special agents, including Ancares, who tried their best to keep track of Baltar, Tirapu, and Furiase for weeks. During the Flower Festival at Ciénaga Ranch, they spotted all three of them, but the situation drastically changed when the area got flooded with many civilians. Furiase got to know that something was not right, and soon, a firefight started between their goons and the agents.
The CNI agents could ultimately neutralize their targets, but Mission Ciénaga saw a bloodbath where bystanders got caught in the crossfire and died. The Spanish government and the then CNI bosses decided to keep the details of this mission completely off the records. That’s why, despite being one of the chiefs at CNI, Elena could not understand why the former agents of Mission Ciénaga were being targeted and killed.
Who Is Casiel, and Why Is She Wanted? In reality, there were six agents who went to Mission Ciénaga, not five. The sixth agent’s name was Sara Pilar, who happens to be Zeta’s mother. Back then, she was initially the most trusted informant of Ancares, and due to her skills, CNI put her in the team. Slowly, she fell in love with Ancares, and the duo eventually had Iago (Zeta). But, for the CNI, Sara was nothing but the key to extracting all information and whereabouts of Furiase. She had to charm Furiase in one of the parties under Ancares’s and CNI’s instructions. That charm made Furiase fall for her, and he welcomed Sara into his mansion.
Sara used all the means to track Furiase and even rummaged through his personal belongings at times. While Furiase was meeting with Baltar and Tirapu at the Flower Festival in Ciénaga, Sara sneaked into his office to look for documents regarding their drugs and arms dealings. However, she failed to notice the CCTV installed somewhere in the office, and she was caught by Furiase’s son, Furiase Jr. He immediately warned his father, but, by the time Furiase knew about Sara’s betrayal, Sara and the agents had opened fire on him.
The firings transformed the whole festival into chaos, and civilians in the vicinity just wanted to escape. As Sara killed Furiase, she watched the whole bloodbath unfold before her eyes. Many lives were lost that day, just because of one wrong move by Sara. That’s why, after the whole thing was covered up, the five CNI agents decided to drop their names off the grid. Ancares, who was previously known as Eric Baena, dropped his name to take up the name of Salvador Ancares. To protect Sara from the wrath of the terrorists, ETA, and the Furiase family, the agents gave her a name, Casiel. It was an acronym made with the first letters of every CNI agent’s name. Sadly, despite being pregnant with Ancares’ son, Iago (Zeta), Ancares and Sara had to cut ties for life.
Why Did Alfa Kill Esteban Furiase?Among all the twists in “Agent Zeta”, Alfa’s identity reveal was one of the most shocking ones. Alfa’s real name was Salome Suarez, and when she was a little girl, Salome watched her mother die right in front of her. Her mother was killed in the violent crossfire at the Flower Festival when Mission Ciénaga went wrong. Salome could also remember Sara’s face from that day. Her mother’s death completely changed Salome, and she trained herself to take revenge. Later, Furiase Jr., or Esteban Furiase, who also sought revenge for his father’s death, contacted and secretly hired Alfa/Salome. She was indeed a registered agent under the Columbian Intelligence Service, but she was also a double agent, fuelled by rage and resentment for Casiel.
In the present, when the Columbian Intelligence Service and CNI jointly interrogate Ancares, Marlon warns Ancares about someone spying for the Furiase clan in the room. Marlon’s assistants also manage to interfere with the spy’s earpiece, and he turns out to be a guy. However, none of them ever suspected Alfa till that moment. During the interrogation, a video from Andresito, a member of the Furiase clan, comes up. There, Andresito admits that Furiase Jr. ordered the hit on the agents of Mission Ciénaga. In reality, Alfa had secretly tipped him off before to get out of suspicion. Ancares talks about Mission Ciénaga and even mentions Casiel’s name, but never mentions that Casiel is a woman. After the Columbian Intelligence Service leaves, Alfa confronts Ancares and directly asks where the “woman” is. Ancares immediately knows that something is wrong and, in Alfa’s absence, lets Zeta know about Casiel’s true identity.
Later on, when the CNI sends Zeta and Alfa to the Furiase clan’s hideout, Zeta approaches to catch Esteban Furiase alive, but he watches Alfa kill him from the doorway. Alfa did not want her secret to get out, and that’s why she goes to such lengths. She somehow suspects that Ancares knows in detail who Casiel is and hires a sniper who tries to listen to Ancares’ and Zeta’s conversation. But from that distance, the sniper fails to record much. However, he shoots Ancares fatally, and later, Marlon confirms his death.
Are Ancares and Sara alive? Before getting shot, Ancares tells Zeta to protect his mother, Sara, at all costs. Soon, Alfa tries to sneak in and kill Sara, but Zeta stops her from doing so. In the process, Zeta gets shot, but his bulletproof vest saves him. Alfa gets hit by Zeta’s gun, and Zeta sends her to the hospital. Zeta never files any police report because to some extent, he understands Alfa’s pain. The day after that incident, Zeta realizes that Ancares might be alive. In the end, Zeta meets Ancares in his house. Even if it was Zeta who watched Ancares’ coffin being lowered to the ground days ago, he knew how secretive his dad was, given his background as a veteran CNI agent. Throughout his childhood, Zeta had known his father was dead, and Ancares never let his guard down for a moment. He started another family despite loving Sara because Ancares never wanted his or Sara’s identity to see the light of day. In the end, their union after ages was a delightful moment in “Agent Zeta.” It was a full-circle moment for both the father and the son, given how hard they had tried to outrun the darkness.
