KUCHING, March 27: Light vehicles in Sabah and Sarawak will be limited to a maximum of 50 litres of diesel per transaction under new government measures to curb leakages, while the subsidised diesel price in both States remains at RM2.15 per litre.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the cap, which applies to public transport, goods, and private vehicles, is part of a broader effort to ensure fuel supply remains sufficient and fairly distributed.
“Light vehicles for public transport, goods and private use will be capped at 50 litres per purchase.
“If too much is bought, it will leak,” he said in a special address broadcast live by RTM yesterday (March 26).
Anwar said the purchase limits will also apply to other categories of vehicles, with those below three tonnes capped at 100 litres per transaction, while vehicles exceeding three tonnes will be limited to 150 litres per purchase.
“These measures are necessary to ensure supply is sufficient and fairly distributed to all. Without such adjustments, we are concerned about tendencies to stockpile and smuggle fuel, as has been detected previously,” he stressed.
At the same time, he reaffirmed that the federal government will maintain the diesel subsidy for Sabah and Sarawak despite rising global prices, citing the unique geographical and logistical challenges in both States.
“Given the geographical and logistical conditions in Sabah and Sarawak, we have taken what I believe is a reasonable approach at this stage. But leakages must be curbed and controlled,” he said.
Anwar also called on the public to cooperate with the government, acknowledging that the measures may cause some inconvenience.
“I ask the rakyat to understand that these steps are necessary to protect the interests of the majority.
“It is not easy and may inconvenience some, but with your support, we can continue our efforts to prevent leakages,” he said. — DayakDaily
